Urgent Advice Please - Beak Broken

Good evening all.

Captain has snapped his top beak off. Am devastated. Literally bawling on the phone to my avian vet. Though I can't be sure, I think he did it whilst trying to chew one of his toys. The vet said due to all his deficiencies his beak may have been brittle. Have stopped the bleeding and vet is in at 8am tomorrow so we both decided to keep him at home tonight and take him in first thing tomorrow. I just wish I had some pain relief for him. He can't get to the clinic tonight though and would have to talk a non-specialist vet through any proceedure. I don't like that idea. He said it may be a case of formula feeding him until it grows back, which would mean towelling him a few times a day. If I thought that would be too much for him to cope with it may be kinder to put him to sleep. What do I do?

Questions... would you get him out and clean him up? Maybe try and give him some water? Or would you just leave him to it tonight?

My poor baby. I just wanted to make him better and give him the best life possible.

Vets can work wonders these days and parrots can be very resilient adapting to such handicaps. He may not be able to eat nuts and seeds but there are plenty of soft foods that he may be able to scoop up and lead an otherwise normal life so hang fire on any other thoughts!

I agree with Kim, the "quick" is still intact and that beak will I am sure regrow, offer him some fruit or even a boiled egg if you have nothing else and leave him alone.
Me personally I would look tomorrow and make a decision on taking him to the vet or just leaving him be and see how he goes, the stress of a vet trip may not in my opinion be worth it as they can't stitch it back on! don't forget a little blood goes a long way and it may not be as bad as it looks.
Has he been tested for PBFD?
best of luck with the little guy.

Ladyc please try and calm down i know it's easier said than done , if the bleeding has stopped try not to catch it as it may start it off again , keep a close eye on him to night , is he used to syringe give him a little water through that as for food soft if possible hunni .((( Hugs ))

Yes, don't clean him up too much, it'll break the blood clot and start to bleed again. Warm mushy foods off a spoon for the first few days. Tinkie did this a few weeks ago. He'll cope, don't worry x

@Bob cna you tell LadyC about little Ruby's feeding
Bob's Ruby his little conure lost her upper beak her's never regrew as she did loose the quick but Bob does her food every morning and night time and she manages just fine

Exactly the same happened to my Ruby, her beak never grew back (Captains might) but she is doing fine 2 and a half years later, she can't eat seed or hard foods but manages well with soft, I grind pellets up in a coffee grinder and add water to make a mushy consistency as her main diet...all the vets could do to help her was to give antibiotics in case of infection and pain killers for the first few days.. how is he in himself, does he seem in shock?

He makes her a mash from pellets and luke warm water with nutrobal in it every morning and every evening and she helps herself she recently started to have a go at sweetcorn and pomegranates by squishing them :) she uses her lower beak like a kind of scoop theory

Thank you everyone. I have emp food so will put some of that in for him tonight. Am waiting for another call from the avian vet as I want to see if he can prescribe some painkillers and antibiotics that I can collect tonight. Will leave it alone with regards to cleaning it for now.

Can I suggest if you have any Spark or Guardian Angel then give him this too.
I have to agree with all that's been said and a vets visit may not be necessary, it no doubt looks far worse with the blood.

Your having a hard time recently haven't you Captain?, but you must be happy, bright eyed, playing with toys and I think your feather condition has improved from that first night. You do look a little surprised but certainly not depressed IMHO. You show them Captain, you are made of strong stuff and with ladyc's help, you will make it.

He just rung... they would still charge the £175 emergency call out fee just to hand me the medication [emoji33][emoji33][emoji33]. He asked what Captain was doing and I said has his head turned and sleeping. He said he sounds comfortable enough so to put some emp food in and come over in the morning as planned.

I have Guardian Angel so will give him some xx
