Getting Lovebird Tomorrow, Please Read

Sounds like a match made in heaven and you will be great friends. Is he harness trained or trained to go into a travel bag or cage?

It expands your birds world to take him outside with you, a drive to the park, a walk up the street, sat outside a coffee shop, anything at all, experiences and adventures.

I`m out with Harley all the time :)

Just to expand on the harness thing, you have a few options should you want to go down that route.

The aviator harness size you'd be looking at is a petite, and although they are slightly too big for a lovebird you can "rig" it so the waist strap falls behind their feet, like this:

Another option is a custom made harness made in the USA, it costs about the same as the aviator harness and it's made for lovebirds however these are not "flying harnesses" they are more of a hang out in the sun and not moving too far kind of thing. Her website is http://www.leathers4feathers.com/Products.html

There are more harnesses around but if I was you those are the 2 I would consider.

Guys just waiting for my phone to charge! Also, what time should he be going sleep at? And how do I know he's sleepy?

Also, what age would you recommend I start taking him out on a harness? Should I make sure he has properly bonded to me first? I am really unaware of what time he should sleep at, but i've turned the lights on now and put him into his cage about 30 minutes ago. Hope I am doing things right! Hope he's not going sleep too early...

As soon as the weather gets nice :)

Mine chooses when to go to sleep, he usually falls asleep on the floor and then i pick him up and put him in his cage, every bird is different. Mine is just about ready to be picked up :)

Guys he's not eating anything but millet?! He won't eat the budgie/lovebird mix i got him, or anything else. Only millet. I'm worried, what do you think I should do? I tried mixing the millet with the mix, but he just picked at the millet. He doesn't like me if I come near him with any other food but millet, and he will fly away. Any help?

And that is so cute haha, I don't think it's Yaya's sleep time yet, he seems pretty active.

Let him eat his millet you're lucky he's eating at all on his first few days! Relax he won't be eating only that forever :)

Aw great! I was a bit worried. He's still up and at it. Having the time of his life haha. I'll upload photos as soon as I get my bloomin phone on!

Sounds like it is going well. I don't think the worrying ever goes away, you just find it easier to live with! :)

Well he's asleep now... I think. Unsure how to tell if he's sleepy or not though. I just hope his eating picks up!  He's not to loud either! I think maybe I should get him sexed to actually know what he is. Well today I taught him to come to me by using some millet as bribery. It's going well, although perfection needs some work! He's adorable. My family came over earlier today, and I was worried it would be bit to much for her. But he loved it, he was going on everyone's shoulder. he seemed so happy to be around a few people as the centre of attention. :) I love him

So pleased to hear that! You should take this opportunity to become very tactile with him and get him used to cupping him in your hands, touching him under the wings, putting him upside down, lying on his back... do it for a second and let him go, reward him a lot and fuss over him, and very slowly increase the time you hold it. It will help you massively not only with harness training but at the vets and in any situation where you have to just grab him.

Slowly does it :)

Yes I have put him on his back for about 3 seconds, and rewarded him. He did okay, but wanted to get up by grabbing my finger with his beak and pulling himself up. ahaha he's adorable, bit me once last night, he got very hyper around 6pm. Ahahaha, it was adorable. Getting him back into his cage was nice and easy. I think I've got lucky with Yaya. Can't wait for day three! Hopefully my phone will decide to charge today so I can take photos of him and the set up. I feel like I need to put something in the cage for him to sleep in!? Again guys, thanks so much for your help and support!

Have a look on Scarlett's site. She has hidy things that some birds will snuggle into. Sounds like you have made a great start. You will b able soon to tell when she is tired a bedtime routine is a good way to settle them.

I think you have been very lucky to get such a lovely bird like Yaya, you will have many happy years together

Usually when a bird is tired they fluff up a little bit and start sitting on one leg, also they twitch a bit.

The earlier the better to do everything you can with him, harness train, introduce him to new people, try all types of foods etc.

I would try to get into a bit of a routine with the bedtime, something that will suit you both.

Ours are up at 6am so we put ours to bed at 6pm and by 5.30pm Harley`s saying 'bye bye my darling' then BYE BYE meaning 'I`m tired, want to go to bed'!! Lol

You`e doing amazingly well both of you considering it`s your first few days, try some food on the table with you when you eat, birds are very social and he may feel more comfortable eating as part of the 'flock' :)

Ok, I noticed him sitting on one leg on my hand earlier today! I got bit worried ahaha. He's nibbling on my ear ahahaha, not sure why but he's not trying to bite me so I'm guessing it's a good thing ahah.

Ruby does exactly what Scarlett described too. Goes on one leg, fluffs up and twitches a bit. Good idea about the routine. Ours is very different to Scarlett's. Ruby's cover is taken off just before 8am. As we are out at work all day, Ruby is out of her cage from about 5:30pm until we go to bed, just before midnight. Ideally, she should have 12 hours continuous slep every night but if we did that, we wouldn't see her so she has a routine that allows her as much out of cage time as we can. Luckily for us, it has worked out for us and I know she naps during the day.

I think you'll have to work out a routine that suits you both.
