Obi And His Random Attacks

I was bitten on the lip by a sulphur crested at a bird show once (The little devil)  was so sweet and innocent before and afterwards.

Rain you summed up a sennie beautifully, 'can opener with wings'  that is so true! and 'the bite is disproportionate to his body', they have the bite of a too don't they! that really made me chuckle but it is VERY true!!

I would say he is playing, my two babies are always doing that with each other and Noah is always doing this with my fingers, I play with him this way but if he has over stepped the mark I tell him like they do to eachother :)

And it's never a quick bite - they hang on and grind from side to side to try and remove flesh. I'm sure there's a vampire gene hidden in their DNA somewhere.

I think it's the day for it, I've just had a proper lunge and warning bite from Blue.  She sits on me a lot while I work, sometimes quietly waiting for a scritch :)   Today she made her kiss noise, I did mine back and turned to look at her... nearly lost an eye... oppps

I will add that no bird should ever be trusted on the shoulder so it's best not to encourage it.[ that was a public service announcement from ..... :)   ]

Yeah that's so true Lisa, Ruby on your shoulder is like an injury waiting to happen. But I still do it for the 10% chance that she does want to snuggle up! Worth it even if for 90% of the time she wants to attack me!

mm agree on shoulder thing. Sophie is a shoulder bird given slightest oppertunity but I really do not like it and won't let her stay there, I cannot read her body language when she is there and so do not know when to back off. She is a good girl and not a biter but she has her moments when she wants me to STOP and if i can't see her face I can't know and its a bite waiting to happen. I also am fairly attached to my ear lobes and would prefer them to stay attached to me

I have to say since Tommy the Amazon bit through my ear lobe he's never been allowed on my shoulder again.

The sennies are though even though they give a nip but nothing like having the ear lobe pierced right through. :nono:

Obi is a shoulder bird also, it's the chance you take I guess. Obi is usually really content on my shoulder and I don't mind hm being there but saying that I do worry about my ears as he do tend to lightly nibble if I don't get his food fast enough lol I don't allow him on my head though the thought of him pooping in my hair is not a good one

Ri is a shoulder bird too but I have had the top gristly bit of my ear ripped a couple of times. And he's gone for my eyes a few times but I've been lucky with that so far. He likes to preen my eyelashes and eyebrows but it's such a chance to take - I only let him when he's sleepy. He also sometimes tries to stick his sluggy tongue in my ear and then laugh.

He goes from snuggle bug to blood thirsty monster in a split second - no warning. I'm sure he just has weird dreams about me, that I've hurt him or something - and thinks they're true.

When he's hormonal he's not allowed on my shoulder though, as he's in attack mode far too much for my liking.

I read somewhere that baby birds feel safe on your shoulder and they like to be close to you. Obi is nearly seven months so still very young, things will probably change when he matures though so I'm making the most of it.

That's the trouble I suppose all animals bite at some point just have to minimise the risks and if we allow them places which are risky then it's our own faults x

Ali :)

well some I have on my shoulder some I don't, Chilli just sits there and has never bitten and I really don't think he would, Noah loves it to but like Obi he is just a baby so making the most of it, Caesar snuggles into my neck and never bites but if he did it wouldn't be major, Jim Is allowed no where near I would not have a face left and I used to have George on until he bite me under the eye but then he is Dave's bird now, Dave has him on shoulder all the time, you are right though you cant read their body language and its personal choice :)

I wouldn't have thought its got anything to do with his diet hun, you feed him a smashing diet, im no expert so maybe wait for some better advice but I personally would say he is just getting older and finding his feet and its his way of say, im not going to do that, Noah is like this with me, they all have different personalities and he is a big male so maybe he will be a more dominant kind of character? like I say Im not sure but I think its just him growing up, it doesn't sound like aggression it just sounds like,  don't want to do that kind of behaviour and experimenting how hard he can bite something xx

i find its better not to pull away so he doesn't get a reaction, i use my other hand to lift his beak off if that makes sense  or touch im on his back and he soon lets go and looks around as if to say what was that, i think its really important that you don't flinch or show he has hurt you as this encourages the biting more, could be wrong but that's what i do

That makes sense about the growing up and not wanting to do certain things but it all stated so suddenly. Thank you just think I'm having a bad day x

Ali :)
