Hello

Ah i understand now.

Have your kings ever been around children?

I'm torn now between a cockatiel and a king...least I've narrowed it down a bit eh :)

Also are the smaller conures any good with children? I heard they were very noisy too, is that right?

I would say the larger conures the Aratinga species...like my Blue Crowned are loud ....but the smaller conures the Pyrrhura species not so much .

yes all have but not my present pair as they I hope will breed they still are very friendly with me or my guests although I have not tried to train them in any way.  people say the sun is very loud but with training this can be turned into words and not calls my blue crowned are not to loud but Kenny is a good talker and lucky will only start to call when he is wanting food.  Louie my nanday talks but will call a little in the morning or when I get in.

Sorry Michael, missed your message.

King parrots seem to be quite rare don't they? I'd love to meet one to see what they're like.

Sorry to be negative but i would go for something fluffy instead of feathers like a rabbit or a kitten because birds do not always want to be cuddled and it might be hard for a child to understand, they can be hormonal and have you seen yoo tube vids of parrots screaming and crying copying a baby's cry, it is quite scary and i do not think that you could ever stop this.I am not saying that your child does this but it is something to think about.

My childs not a baby:/ he's one of the best behaved children I know.

I'm not planning on going out next week and buying one, I'm waiting until I'm sure he's calm enough around these birds to be safe, and even then he'd never be left unsupervised with it.

if you do a search for "Funky and Flash"  this may give you a clue but I have some photos of all them three being cuddled by me will have to find them.  I am in Kent they are not common but I know seven other people who keep them not living far from me.  I have only seen them at shows although Flash was arranged at quite a high cost for the egg to be incubated and hand fed by a friend specially for me but you can find breeders through the parrot society.

Just had a look Michael, they're gorgeous!

It's such a shame they're not more documented, i can find very little info about them as pets online and theyre not even mentioned in my book.

Cockatiels on the other hand seem to be the less risky choice.

I do hope my living room doesn't end up like yours, full of cages!

I love my room there is not a lot of information on the king parrot as until recently they had been thought to be aviary birds only Ben was one of my free flyers. you can find information in "the handbook of cage and aviary birds" by Matthew M. Vriends and Tanya M. Heming-Vriends.

I shall have to look for that book, the one I have doesn't seem too bad but I think it's version of "child friendly" is a little off lol :)

I wonder if anyone will have one at Stafford...

Really looking forward to it, obviously not going to buy a bird, but knowing us we'll come home with something silly, like a toy we won't be using for a while lol!

Oh god don't we fed ostriches yesterday, was scared the thing was going to take my hand off...they have rather frightening eyes!
