Progress at last  :)  Harley has been let out for the 5th time today over The past week he's sertainly enjoying the freedom when he's out he flies back and forth the room and then sits on his perch on the top of his cage today he approached me tonight as if to take a monkey nut out of my hand but backed off last second he's a chatty birdy too making horse noises and jumping around like a 2 year old child It's Fantastic to see I have never had a bird like him.

Brilliant, you are getting there,  it is so pleasing to hear of a happy bird and happy slave. :applause:    He obviously is settling down and looks like he has given you the OK, but I would not recommend monkey nuts, they can carry a fungi dangerous to birds.

He sounds happy, that's lovely to hear. He's only been with you a very short time, so just keep on with the patience and enticing treats and he'll come to you eventually. Ditto on the monkey nuts though, try pecans, walnuts, almonds (there are others they love too). There's a great section on food here that tells you what's ok for birds and the not ok things too :)

In regards to the monkey nuts a bird knows what nut is good and what is bad my parents run a parrot rescue and parrots drop the bad nuts and eat the good ones

I think it is the dust that shoots out of the monkey nut shell as its opened that may cause the damage.

Yes  they will not eat a bad nut that's for sure!

OK, so it's been have decided, all the info I have seen on the forum or elsewhere is totally wrong and monkey nuts are fine for our feathered friends, great to know so many people I thought were friends have been misinforming me.

Its the mould spores in the shell and on the nut that causes the problem.

It can cause aspergilliosis which there is no cure for.

Its not a matter of knowing which is good and which is bad. They dont know how many mould spores are in that particular nut.

Its a bit like saying they wont eat chocolate because they know its bad for them. Yet if left alone they will get their beaks into anything and everything.

There are various threads on here about nutrition and even some on aspergilliosis. We are simply trying to prevent the heartache that comes with aspergilliosis.

I think the dust has been linked to aspergillosis   (sp!) Many vets will say not to give them for that reason also too many nuts are fattening.

I will admit mine do have human grade roasted ones from Tesco occasionally, always have.

no one has misinformed you @Kendra danbold112 I have to reiterate whats been said and stress the importance of this, it has nothing to do with good nuts or bad nuts, indeed they will not eat bad ones its has to do with fungi which is inside the shell, monkey nuts grow in the ground and do carry the fungi which causes aspergillosis which affects their air sacs and lungs and there is no cure and many birds die from this many of us have suffered the loss of a bird with aspers and its aweful its about weighing up the risks, your def playing with fire in feeding them, birds don't often show signs of aspers until its too far gone and the don't recover, if your parents run a parrot sanctuary I strongly recommend you tell them about this to and do some research for the sake of the birds, yes they are in a lot of seed mixes for parrots but these seed mixes aren't worth buying, they also contain a lot of sunflower seeds which are detrimental to their health to but they are still sold and really shouldn't be. I am delighted he is settling in well and you are making wonderful progress with him so well done you must be chuffed and its lovely to read he is coming round means he is happier and that's great :)
