Hurt Leg, Advice Please

Hi all,

I've just taken Charlie out and noticed he had a reddish spot on his right leg under the feathers. I was able to pull his leg out slightly more and it seems he has a skin wound! How does something like this happen? He must have got his leg caught on something in the night? He is an only bird and I have never before seen him get caught on any of his toys, and there are no obvious signs of blood anywhere.. Its a bit of a mystery... But more importantly, does he need the vet for something like this? Or is it best to leave it to heal on its own? Is there anything I can put on it? He is not limping and is walking around normally, but definitely doesn't want me near it.

Thanks for your advice!

Poor Charlie have you seen him nibbling at it? have you any F10 products - wipes etc. you could bathe it with, or failing that I believe a little smear of Savlon is okay to use. Let's see what others advise.

I have some F10 Germicidal Barrier Ointment from Scarletts for just in case which is specified for open wounds.
Really could do with finding the cause hun? Did he do it to himself? If so straight to the vet please?

No I definitely dont think he could have done it to himself. I've never seen him nibbling at his feet at all..
What a shame, Ive just put an order in yesterday from Scarletts Parrots! Didn't know about the F10... Will a bit of Savlon be ok?

Have you got any normal F10 (for disinfecting and nebulizing) which you could make into a solution and spray on? I have in the past sprayed on an antibacterial spray made for human cuts. I don't see why you couldn't use a tiny dab of savlon although it might gunk up the feathers.

Birds can and do injure themselves for similar reasons to plucking. If they feel pain somewhere they quite often attack and area on the body, obviously the feet and legs are easily accessible.

You could ring Scarlett and ask her to add it if not sent already?

Aw, its already been sent!.. I will try and put on some antibacterial spray I have. Thanks for your advice! I really do hope he's not inflicted this on himself.. What should I watch out for if this is the case?

Aw that does look sore, hopefully it should heal quickly, I hope he doesnt pick at it?

Do you have an Aloe Vera plant?

Fresh/reopened or a bigger wound or additional ones else where. I'd go to the AV if he does this anyway, probably now he has the wound it will be difficult to determine if he is picking just because it is there or for another reason.
Is everything else 'normal' with him hun?

Have you also felt all around his cage and any toys for anything that can cause this? Make sure his cage is kept scruplously clean hun.

He's much better today, thankfully. The wound is no longer bleeding and is getting a scab on. He's not picking at it at all so thats good! Thanks for the advice all! x
