This Is What I Have Come Home To (not Nice)

Might be worth exploring Julia, as you know Ruby loves hers and so far no plucking.  But I'm aware, plucking could still happen with her and if there was a theory, Harrison's could be the issue, I'd certainly be looking into it.

yep happy chappy :)  just one thing to consider and I know I can harp on about this so pls forgive me you know I don't want to offend but it could be diet related with the Harrisons? birds are showing having reactions to this and it makes me think of Margy's Roxxi who is doing better plucking wise now she is not being fed it?? its just an idea, more than likely is hormones though, I also don't think your vet is a bad vet because he wont give a collar, it is psychological and we know its a prevention and not a cure and I think it would make him worse and more depressed

How can you possibly offend me on this subject after everything I have said about it!!!!

I have to admit my ears pricked up when I read Margy's article on this. Archie actually eats hardly any Harrisons at all and you may or may not realise that it has been a long term goal for him to have chop as his main food. The reason I have kept to the Harrisons is because I can not yet rely on him eating the chop I want him to eat 100% in order for him to get his full nutritional intake. I haven't cracked it yet.

For example if I put cooked sweet potato in he knows it and won't touch it, or like yesterday I stuck a couple of raspberries in and he wasn't having it, or if it is a bit more mushy than usual he doens't want it!

I will not put him on seed as you know and he will not eat the other pellets so I am a bit stumped it this area.

My course of action is to be able to find some key chop recipes that I can rely on no him to eat no matter what but it hasn't happened yet.

That's a good point Julia, if Ruby started plucking now, I guess Harrison's wouldn't be the cause if she'd always had it.

but I mentioned it cause his plucking has gotten worse? it was just an idea :)  some of mine are really fussy to when it comes to certain things

and Brenda Margy's Roxxi had been on it for some time before she started plucking, don't forget the offending things in the pellets like salt build up in the system over a period of time

Urmmmm..the whole pellet diet thing is a conundrum...but the devil is in the detail and I don't think the manufacturers give us sufficient detail ....Margy said the Roxii was fed Harrisons Mash.....and said she had concerns about the peanuts...but according to Meadows site, the mash doesn't contain peanuts ...the pellets do  :dntknw:

Weve fed Harrisons for about 18yrs.

Now we feed the Adult Lifetime course .The only thing we notice with ours is that over the years they seem to have got a little lighter in the plumage might be diet might be age don't know ??

.But one day a week they get AS 30 .They also  get chop one day, Veg one day ,fruit one day besides their main feed .

About this annual thing !!! If you read some of my posts from Christmas I have a liitle saying you must have seen it

A Golden Lay around Boxing Day !

This year she was a bit later, about 5 weeks but were never far out

Tim at crimbo stripped her perfect chest to fluff overnight .

Tim is so predictable after all these years . At one time every time she stripped herself we used to run to the vets eg hormone injections ,implants  and chewed flights removed

. Now we let her lay and let her sit em out . Having said that every year when they go for their annual mot in the spring to the vets she always withdraws a load of chewed up flights while she is doing her nails and beaks. That annual task is also the same, predictable.

Yes I have read your posts about Tim. I am suspecting that a similar thing is going on with Archie as although he has feather problems in general this pulling the whole lot out at once has only happened once before. I wanted to ask you - at this time does Fester feed Tim? I ask because Archie is reluctant to eat at the moment but scoffs it if I hand feed him and I think that in this warped hand rearerd breeding system, he thinks that I am his mate and this is the time of year that I should be feeding him...just a theory.

I know when my little nudist is getting eggy now- she starts getting desperate to feed me-and demanding/clingy.  I think these sex hormones and weird human imprint problems cause a lot of the plucking issues as it does make life fustrating for them,

Oh that is really interesting, so Sophie's last cycle was before Christmas wasn't it? Do you think it would be every 6 months or once a year?  I have been wondering if Chloe might be starting down the same track as, as of yesterday she is like velcro on me and nips me when I try to put her down!

we have had 2 lots with sophie so far- about 6 months apart.  I recognised what was going on second time- went all secretive and trying to get into dark corners like gap behind cage, trying to chew wood apart (unfortunatly our dado rail not chew toys) calling me at odd times and demanding to be fussed then regurgitating on me and not wanting to be put down.

how often other folks birds do it I don't know,

When you can see the signs it must give you so much comfort to be able to predict it and not think that she is ill or that something is wrong. Just think of all those people who don't care/understand enough to observe their birds like that in order to truly acommodate their needs.

Julia, first egg took me by surprise... I thought she was dieing in my arms and was busy getting husband to dig out emergency avian vet number, carrier and taxi when suddenly a shockingly large egg rolled accross my lap!!!

Just catching up! So sorry that you had to come home to such a distressing scene. I hope that all the replies are helping you shed some more light on causes and make you feel a bit better about it all. He really does seem happy in that video! he clearly knows you love him very much :) x

How's archie doing?

Thank you for asking. Unfortunately he is continuing to snip and remove feathers, I have never seen him look like this. He refuses to eat but when I feed him he is eating a lot so I am having to pay extra attention to what I put in his chop as he will not touch the Harrisons even from me. He is leaving all the down like my other one does, in the past he has actually removed everything but it is making him look like a chick.

I'm so sorry :( I have no experience in this kind of thing at all but I'm sending lots of love! Please keep us updated. Hopefully he will shake it off soon x
