Licking Upper Beak

Bebe has this weird habit of licking the roof of her mouth and sort of rolling sticky snot around. The end of her tongue goes white and she zones out and waves obsessively. It happened originally at bedtime when she was winding down for sleep. Our vet said to monitor the timing and if she starts to do it more often and at odd times then get in touch. Bebe has some 'issues' and is a bit obsessive and neurotic in her behaviour, so we weren't overly concerned and it was possibly a self soothing behaviour we were advised. However, in the last couple of days Gary has started to do the same thing (snot and white tongue) without the trance and the waving, and at any time. He's booked in for a general check up and his preen gland drain, this Saturday, in the meantime has anyone seen this on their bird? I found a video of an eclectus online who did it and it was a crop infection for him.

Awww bless them. It is not a seizure is it. Especially being so hot at the moment.
I hope thing's improve xx

Oh yes she’s fine. It’s her annual check and also her ‘holidays’, she’s staying in the rainforest room for a week.
Guess what! We're in on Monday afternoon now with Bebe. Just her check up mainly. Appointment is at 2.30, so if you're there and see a macaw flirting with the idea of being a nudist, you know it's us lol!

Aww no, we’ll be dropping her off in the morning! But if she’s settled, I’m sure you’ll hear her chatting to herself from reception!

Update on Bebe's vet visit from Monday.... clean bill of health! Richard (av) said she was ideal weight, clear airways, beak, nares, ears and eyes. Chest sounded great, etc etc... Her preen gland wasn't full enough to need draining either. (Weirdly both her and Gary have unrelated problems with their preen gland being blocked, Gary had his drained on Saturday, and Richard uses the oil for his fly fishing lures! [emoji23]).

Basically all of her lovely weirdness is behavioural, she has definite obsessive compulsive issues which, as her physical health is fine, he can only tentatively put down to her life experiences so far. Her history is not fully known, except that we're her 3rd or 4th owners and she was only 12 when we got her. Alison and Brendan who asked us to be her new forever home, would still have her if their situation was different, so we know that at least she had one really lovely family before us. So, the crop air-filling, followed by a series of contented little burps, the snot rolling whilst zoned out and waving like a maniac, and the pin-feather removals so she can eat the feather pulp, are seemingly self soothing rewards for her that she's learnt as a 'coping' mechanism. Like someone biting their nails I suppose.

He said that with the info we have on her, since we adopted her, and her challenging behaviours and quirks, he is pleased we've got her because he doesn't think she would have thrived as much in most other homes. I nearly cried, 'cos a lot of you know what it's like to have the occasional meltdown, thinking you're doing everything wrong! At least I know we're on the right path!

I'd much rather be backed up in my concerns and have everything checked out, than be dismissive and assume is all ok when it's not! A horrible personal experience has taught me to get stuff checked out if you're not sure, and sometimes the LAST thing you need is someone saying "don't worry about it, it's nothing to fuss over". So thank you for caring! [emoji11]
