Help with general training

Hi all, I’m Charlotte, nanna to Pickle, a 1 year old male parent reared Indian Ring neck parrot. We have had him for 9 months and he most definitely does not like hands, and that’s ok. My concern is two things: 1. The boy has some long nails, but I can’t grab him without destroying all the in roads already made to take him somewhere to get them filed and he just doesn’t trust people at all. 2. When he is out, it will be for multiple days because he just won’t go back in and then I have to starve him, as in put his food in the cage and he won’t go near it - my daughter is having a melt down because she’s afraid to have him out and my house just ends up covered in poop because he gets run of the kitchen/living room when we are in bed lol - any tips?

Welcome, sorry you are having problems with Pickle, parent reared birds take a lot of time to get used to humans. Let's see what advice our members can offer @Roz @Wera ...indeed anyone please.

hi and welcome to the forum @puddensden
You need to make friends with Pickle, he's a prey species by natures design eyes set to the side of the head, you are designed as a predator your eyes set to the front of your head. So we need to start with showing your not going to grab two slices of bread and stick Pickle in then middle
You need to read these threads to start with.
Remember rome was not built in a day it take time patience and then more time and patience.

Hi and welcome… we had similar cage problem especially with Blu… maybe on the day you have plenty of time you let him out in the morning and after some time ( around hour) slot his breakfast bowl in hopefully he will go back to eat… although it wasn’t necessary always working with Blu so in the end I restricted some of her treats and favourite food just to cage time… so on outside of the cage when we do training she would still get pieces of walnut but nutriberry was restricted only to go back in the cage time and I would hide few sunflowers seeds in her toys so she can forge for it
