Carpet Cleaner?

I have an issue with poop on my carpet. My two go anywhere and everywhere (I should really start my own fertiliser company), and my hoover doesn't get the bits and bobs up. I have poop off but I find that just smears if I try and hoover up over it. What can I use to put on the poo and help lift it out of the carpet that is relatively cheap and bird safe?

I have used 1001 carpet cleaner in warm water & scrub the area, or you can get it in a spray, spray a little of it on the area & scrub off, also have used a steam cleaner that's good too but a longer job. If they always poop in a certain place then put newspaper on the floor , or on furniture an old sheet/throw/towel/curtain - anything!

Was looking into the hand held steam cleaners then vacuuming over the spots. Ideally, I would love a wooden floor. Is that any easier? I can't imagine it smearing when wiping up fresh poos.
