ZolcalD supplement

Most people i know give calcivet a couple of times a week but the zolcalD is more concentrated and usually given upon diagnosis of a deficiency as far as i was aware anyway 🤔

Yes, Bert was on it daily as something he had or medication he was on absorbed calcium, but the plan was on nice that was under control he would have zolcal twice a week as normal.

Silly question but did your avian vet confirm that was responsible ?

Or even did they or you take a sample ?
Just wondering as, if so that would carry huge weight and they could/would even spread the word amongst themselves.

Our late grey that was seen by an avian vet who moved me from calcivet to ZolcalD, his words “it’s a superior product”
So I’m guessing they haven’t heard of anything like this before and they supply it to sick birds
I am sorry to hear about your grey.. ❤️.. they are such special little feathery friends.. with their own personalities. When my little friend had a seizure I rang my vet straight away and he knows me very well and asked had I bought anything new recently or had polly come into contact with anything mouldy as myco toxins from fungi can cause seizures in birds like the one polly had.. I had just been using all my usual stuff and he said to check the fresh food that I had been giving her for any signs of mould etc and there was nothing. I was hand feeding her favourite treats of sugar snap peas and pulling the peas out of the pods and lacing them with the guardian Angel and the concoction my vet got his nurses to mix up at the surgery .. the next morning it was her calcium day that I added the Zolcal D into her water and I used a white measuring spoon as I couldn’t find my stainless steel measure and as I poured the Zolcal D out it was like brown spider spores and inside the top of the bottle lid was tiny black mold spores forming! It is in date until July 2021. I have used ZolcalD for 20 years it is usually a very superior calcium product with excellent absorption in parrots.. and I have never had a problem up until these last two batches.. when I saw the spider lol spores in the Zolcal D I phoned my vet, he said straight away that was the likely source as mould can be quite dangerous to parrots and cause seizures like the seizure polly had.. with it being lockdown my vet was working from his home which was a good 70 miles away from the practice and I didn’t want to stress my little friend further on a 140 mile round trip.. I collected a little concoction of powders from the surgery which is local and also gave my little friend guardian Angel which certainly helped, it had probiotics to help with what was going off and it also has supplements to support a sick bird. It took a few days for the Zolcal to get out of her system and she finally stopped having the seizures.. it has taken about 3-4 weeks and she has got her energy back and is talking and whistling and singing.. it was heartbreaking watching her just slumped on the perch and her not wanting tickles or to dance, I did think I was going to lose her at one point but I sat up one night and just cuddled her to stop her going into the seizures, she was screaming and frightened everytime, i didn’t get bit but some parrots apparently when having seizures can bite and be very aggressive.. the vet said that because the seizures have completely stopped after removing the affected Zolcal D from her regime and that she is back to her normal self that it could not be disease related and I haven’t changed the multivitamin and minerals dose so she isn’t under or over supplemented, I have now moved her onto the vets calcium, the replacement ZolcalD was fine when I opened it but by the time I needed the third dose I could see a similar formulation of spider spores inside and it’s on the side with the other bottle for the relevant government agency to analyse the contents and they can identify the organisms inside it.. had the seizures continued for much longer the vet was going to do bloods and toxicology but because after stopping the Zolcal D and treating for fungal infection the seizures halted, we didn’t do the tests. My vet is pretty good he is semi retired but I’ve know him 40 years and he isn’t one to take your money at the first sign of a problem and rush into a load of tests. Some of the old remedies are the best. Hopefully once the Zolcal D is analysed, it will reveal a few answers.. I think it may have to be food standards agency or environmental health that have to sort it , I could not speak to my local council this morning they are closed but will ring them on Tuesday and they can point me in the right direction to get the stuff analysed. When did your vet recommend Zolcal D ?., with me having 2 bottles of the stuff from the same supplier it can’t be classed as an isolated incident and hopefully the relevancy government agency will be able to issue the appropriate product recall in the media.. as much as it would be great to shout it all over social media and name the culprits I don’t want to jeopardise any investigation.. I will let you know the outcome.

My little friend just had zolcalD twice a week in her water and had done for 20 years without any issues...

Sadly as far as I know Vetark is not in the hands of Peter Scott any more being an avian vet he would be devastated. Such a nice chap.
That is such a shame and could perhaps explain why this has occurred... I wonder if the new owners have tried to source cheaper raw ingredients for some of their products or changed the formulas. I’ll have a look on companies house and see when Peter stood down.
