Hi,

Not sure if anyone else uses this calcium/vitamin d3 supplement but i thought id just make a quick post to warn others just incase. I recently bought a new bottle and have only used it once. Last night I filled Ollie's water and added a drop before bringing him his bowl which he then drank from. I then went back to the kitchen to pour some for my parrotlets. When i was doing this I noticed some black slimey looking stuff on the inside of the neck of the bottle. I then looked inside and saw there was more floating around inside. By this point Ollie had already drank his water but I went straight back and changed his water again. He then drank some more fresh water without the supplement and ive emptied out the contents into a bowl to take pictures as I didnt know what it was. Ive also forwarded these on to the company explaining the situation.

That’s strange, I used to use calcivet but was told to change to ZocalD by the avian vet seeing Bert.

It is worrying seeing that sort of thing, but to be honest id Never notice in mine as I syringe from the bottle into his water.

be interesting to hear what they come back with.

Yeah a lot of people I know use calcivet but as a more regular supplement every few days. I think Ollie also got put on it by a vet as he had a vit A, D and calcium deficiency 5 months prior to me adopting him. I wish id noticed before I gave it to him. Just something to look out for but Ive had it before this and had no issues up until now

We’ve been using calcivet twice a week since we got Bert last January, it was only 4/5 weeks ago we changed to ZocalD when he went for his illness, but he did have low calcium levels, so I just went with what I was told by the vet.

A lot of people (like Rosemary Low) prefer to use a powder rather than a liquid as it can be given more reliably - for example in scrambled egg or another moist treat like mashed sweet potato. It's a better way to ensure the correct dose is consumed, given that the liquid tends to sink to the bottom of the water dish.

Looks like mould to me. I just tipped out the dregs of some poop off in preparation for some refill I ordered. I hadn't used it for a while. It had black mould in the bottle just like that, and it was also around the inside of the neck of the bottle. I wonder if your bottle of Zolcal was not properly sealed in the first place? I hope they give you a free replacement bottle. As Oli said, supplements tend to sink in water plus vitamins in water go off very quickly.

The foil seal thing on the inside was still intact as far as i noticed when I opened it. I had to remove it 🤔 yeah I was only using it as his foster gave me that and also nutribal powder supplement and told me he needed both quite regularly due to a vitamin A, D and calcium deficiency but he was diagnosed with that a while ago now. Hes been getting vitamin A in his diet naturally. Hes really fussy but loves sweet potato. He also gets a little scrambled egg with palm nut oil in it on occasion too. Ive contacted my vet via email as they were closed today to see if i can get him booked in for full blood analysis because id rather get it done and speak to a vet myself rather than go off someone elses word and I wanted to be absolutely certain for myself theres no underlying medical issue causing his plucking. Id rather not take a stab in the dark where he is concerned ❤️
