winnies ankles!!

I am no expert on importing birds into the UK, but I would imagine the bird would have to be closed ring, or a microchip. Definitely keep the ring, also any receipts of purchase for Winnie, and veterinary care.

For Marley and my tortoises I keep records for each and every individual animal in my care in a ring binder. This includes all receipts, for purchase, veterinary care, records of any blood work and test results, and certificates for the tortoises.

If she doesn't like the pet carrier that you use, try and make sure you give yourself plenty of time to get her in there. Marley is not to keen on his travel cage, but he loves the car ride, saying hello to every person and vehicle we pass. Its a bit late now, but train her to use her travel cage in the future, as this is really handy in this type of situation or an emergency.
i will find out more about it but i imagine she would need something of that sort too, i will keep her ring.

i will start doing that!

i honestly have been trying to get her more used to her carrier for weeks and she is fine sitting on top of it but has not put a foot on the perch inside! i have tried so many things and even had a consultation with a bird trainer but not much progress has happened. i guess she can take some time to be comfortable in it. i might use the other carrier tomorrow so she doesn't hate the backpack.

have also found a vet who works for the WWF and is the vet for a great amazon breeder here. but not too sure if he is an avian vet. The amazon breeder thinks he is more knowledgable than my current vet. He said she is 'commercial' while the WWF vet is a 'hobbyist'. i know it is up to my judgement to choose a vet i am just writing this as notes for myself honestly!

I'm not sleeping. Have a good, uneventful journey there and back! May the process be quick and easy. Look forward to hearing about how it went when you get back.

Thank you! We are back now! The drive there was ok, Winnie was a bit confused but I think the choice to use the backpack was a good one. The vets were great and looked after Winnie very well but could not get her whole ring off as it is so thick and the vets were worried about keeping Winnie under anaesthetic for much longer! They got half of it off though (length wise). They determined that her ring is too big for her and can really go all the way up her joint so that is why it’s rubbing. The growths are also just hyper keratosis, they honestly look better and than last time too. No blood test this time (I stupidly forgot to ask) but next time we go to get the rest of the ring off I will ask for one. The drive back was much easier as Winnie was very groggy and slow so I did open her backpack and she climbed onto my shoulder, it was amazing because she has never seen outside like that, she was very interested!
Here are some pictures of her at the vets! I wasn’t able to be there but the vet took some.97957A86-F2F1-46BD-9553-4913C67E540F.jpeg

Thank you for the update so pleased all went well but what a shame she will have to go back, at least you know she is in good hands with your vet xx

Yes, the vet sounds good. How long was the journey? Sorry you have to repeat it, but better safe than sorry. At least you know what the growths are too which will ease your mind a bit. Winnie has the most beautiful face! 🥰

yeah i think she is great! it was about an hour and 20 mins. yeah, i don't mind going again if it means getting that band off! it must be very annoying for poor winnie!
i think she does too, she has such a sweet baby face:see_hearts:

Lovely Winnie :feel_loved: brave little sweetie.
Not following how its half a ring removed though..... should have been a straight cut with the ring cutter in two places one cut at 12 o'clock the other at 6 o'clock. but with everything going on over here my brain is mush so nothing surprises me at the moment.

sorry i didn't see your comment!
yeah i am not too sure why they didn't do that...
maybe they didn't want to cut one side fully as they realised it would take too long to cut the other side (as it was so thick) and could be dangerous to keep winnie on anaesthetic for much longer. (that took many attempts to make it sound right :nut:)

It’s just getting worse here.
winnie has a sore on her foot now. The band is just digging into her foot. The vet said it would be ok until she came back but it’s definitely not. I am not even sure when the vet is coming back.
until I can get her band off once and for All, is there anything I can do to help her with the pain? I know it hurts her a lot and she is on the brink of limping.
It’s not bleeding out yet.
this has just gone on too long and I keep taking the vets word that Winnie will be ok but it’s not anymore.
I might need to go back to that clinic where the vet who helped my vet is, maybe she can take Winnie’s band off without my vets help. I will find a way to get her band off as soon as possible.
I will upload the video of her leg on YouTube right now so you can see it

i got these things a while ago after reading things to have in a parrot first aid box, i am not sure what they are for
- lubricating jelly sterile
- neomycin sulphate cream
- weak iodine solution
i also have vet wrap, gauze pads, and some kind of bandage if needed (its only small now but..)
can any of this be used to help with the pain?

we have contacted our vet about Winnie going to that clinic but no reply yet. its too late to go now but i might call the clinic directly tomorrow (i will see if they are still taking calls now) morning so we can hopefully get Winnie an appointment tomorrow. Boy this is stressful! I hope to get it over with as soon as possible for winnie's sake.
is there nothing i can really do until then? i know i should be asking a vet but i am a little sceptical about her advice right now.
thank you as always

That ring needs to come off ASAP. Try and keep the foot area as clean as possible, so no infection sets in. Maybe a vet nearby can remove it for you, with out Winnie being knocked out.

It’s almost 10pm now and no one is going to be open. I am going to contact a few vets I know around here who might be able to get it off.
what should I clean it with? Should i do anything right now or will it be ok fr the night.
Again I know you are not a vet, I am sure I can do some research on this too, I will take any help I can get from you and I honestly really appreciate it.

i would do it myself if I could but i don’t know what i am doing and don’t want to make it worse. A vet needs to do it.

The vets near us are closed but I emailed them.

our vet is asking the clinic we went to if they can do it, still haven’t replied yet.

last option is the hobbyist vet from WWF but I think he is out of town.

i will wake up early to sort this out. As hard as it is to know Winnie is in pain, I don’t think I can do anything until tomorrow. Please say if there is something you think I can do

Just keep it clean, no need to put anything on it unless it gets infected, Wounds can be effectively cleaned with salt water you must first boil the water before leaving it to cool. 1 teaspoon of salt to 1 pint of water is safe to use in all species.
