Uv light

Its definitely recommended that you have for your flock. A full spectrum of UV does not pass through windows. Vitamin D from UV aids the body in the absorption of calcium which birds commonly become deficient in so it serves a very important role in aiding them to get the most out of their diets. Also as DizzyBlue said they use it to see. They have an extra cone in their retina (tetrachromacy) they use the UV rays from the sun for so many things in the wild such as determining which food is ready to be eaten, finding a mate, determining the gender of other birds. If your birds are fussy with fresh food, one thing that is often recommended is to try feeding them under UV lighting so that they are able to see it in the way they would if they were in the wild. It allows them to see as they naturally would 😊
