Urgent Advice Please- Alfie Is Sick

I am so sorry. I do think he has more chance being at home with you though as parrots really do stress when away from familiar places. things I would try him on- handrearing formular if you can get it easily- ie not if you have to leave him to get it. alternatly fruit human baby food- the stuff that comes in little jars. from nursing birds here I would say main thing is warmth - quite a bit warmer then you or I would like as illness makes them cold and let him have whatever he wants to eat- ie if he likes biscuits but is normally forbidden then let him have one- the sugar will give him a boost. if he wants grapes then I would let him have his fill- very watery things grapes so will hydrate him

I made him a fruit and vegetable smoothie- he ate a little but not much
The vet gave me some oral medication and said if he wouldn't take it I could put some in a bit of natural yoghurt. He ate all of that. I am offering honey water every 2 hours and he is taking a little bit each time (not as much as I would like). I am not sure if I should be offering water more often but I don't want to keep disturbing his sleep. I have e-mailed the pet shop to ask if they have handrearing formula. If they do I will ask a friend to pick me some up.

I love your autocorrect Jude it makes me smile even at the worst of times :)
The fact he is willing to eat is a big thing even if its only what you think is a little a little is better than nothing. As Sunnyring said anything even naught stuff is currently allowed taking diet can be sorted at a later date when he's well again.
Huge hugs to you, just keep going girlie your doing a sterling job even if you don't think you are, as others have said you actually most certainly are xx

I feel useless- probably being a bit tired and emotional. I am actually missing his attitude- he is being very accommodating and un-Alfie-like. He is making the saddest noise every now and again but isn't as slumped as he was earlier.

I really do appreciate all your advice and support. I will try everything.

So sorry to hear about this Lisa. I went through something similar with Frodo over Christmas (he had a bad crop infection that took 3 courses of antibiotics to clear properly) and I know how helpless one can feel. The vet gave me a high energy formula to feed Frodo using the syringe as he had lost a lot of weight quickly. It was called Emeraid IC Omnivore. If you are worried about him getting enough nutrition it might be worthwhile asking the vet for something similar? Hope he recovers quickly.

I am not entirely sure as I haven't had to send to Europe other than the UK, but will post it first thing tomorrow. I will ask what the anticipated arrival will be and let you know.
No worries about costs, but I just need to have your address.
Administrators have my email address if you want to send me a private email.
I will look out for a message.

Just a thought feeding the richer foods at the moment is fine to help keep his strength but as he recovers Being an Eccie the sooner he will accept his normal diet and eating properly the better then only give Alfie any meds to complete his course of medication. I thought I will mention this for other owners of these wonderful birds seek avian vet advice before giving any vitamin or supplement or enhanced foods.

He has eaten about 2-3 teaspoons (roughly) of the baby formula @sunnyring any idea how much he should have?
sorry clueless but would say little and often would be best. birds pick at food all day rather then eating a couple of big meals . If it were me I would offer as much as he wants and stop when he doesn't want any more. offer again a couple of hours later. I cannot imagine he will over eat.
glad to hear he has eaten some- it is at least a decent nutrient rich thing for him to have and of course being wet will help with hydration. keep it up you are doing fab :)

When Frodo was ill he was taking about quarter to half a teaspoon at a time of the formula. Of course a Hahn's Macaw is a much smaller bird, but the fact that Archie *is* eating is good. I'd offer him food often as @sunnyring said. I think we were feeding Frodo about four or five times a day to start off with until he started to eat on his own again and then we offered it to him when he got his medicine twice a day.
