Urgent Advice Please- Alfie Is Sick

I am pleased that you and Alfie are back home, at least the treatment has started and once all the tests come back they can make sure he is fully cured.

Another long night. Alfie lost consciousness. He was stood in his travel cage and his eyes rolled and he fell forward. He wasn't unconscious for long but was dazed for about a minute after. I called the vet and her seemed to think it was hypoglycaemia. He told me to give Alfie some honey in water, which I did and he perked up.

All I can really get him to eat are grapes. I have tried carrot, blueberries, strawberries, kiwi, nectarines but he nibbles a bit and then drops it. Don't think he is going to get all the goodness he needs from grapes :(

I have been keeping him in his travel cage in my room so I can keep an eye on him and I do think he has been a little more active this morning. He is not moving around a lot but has been making a few noises and has been awake more.

I am dreading later when I have to give him the intravenous fluids. The vet said I could give the liquid orally but it will be more effective if it is injected. Then I have to give him his antibiotic injection- he is going to hate me!

His poop is not looking great. I have taken pictures and have sent them to the vet. He basically told me it is a waiting game for the next few days to see if the medication starts to work.

Alfie's wing is still drooping and seems to get in his way and he is annoyed with the bandage around his leg. Wish I could fast forward the next few days.

Sending healing thoughts Lisa, and praying all goes well and that Alfie improves. He will understand that you are trying to help him, even though he may tell you off xxxx

It takes a few days for the medication to take affect and the waiting can be so stressful, the good thing is he is being strong and not giving in and he is eating something, I do wish he will pick up more and ease you worry, My thoughts are with you and Alfie xx

Thank you. I haven't seen him drink this morning so I have been using the syringe to put a drop of water in his mouth. Well to be honest Alfie has been attacking the syringe and then what water has gone in his mouth he is drinking down. So I think I am going to puree his food and try and syringe feed him. I don't want to stress him out but yesterday the vet did keep saying to me if he doesn't eat and drink he will die.

If your going shopping for high sugar intake things try and grab some of these:-
lychees, passion-fruit, pomegranates, mangoes, cherries, bananas, oranges, kiwifruit, grapes and guavas, in this order are the highest sugar content fruits perhaps he is hitting the grapes as he knows the high sugar content plus the amount of liquid in them.

I have to stay home until 12 as he needs his injections then I am going to go and see what is in the pharmacy. Later I will puree some mango, carrot, banana, kiwi and spinach and see if I can syringe feed him some. I read that a bit of apple juice in water can help, but I am not sure if apple juice is good for him. Don't want to do anything to make him worse.

Apple juice in water your talking about the idea of apple cider vinegar which would be for yeast infections.
Anything he will eat at the moment is a good thing he has a very very long digestive tract
Remember if your going to try and syringe feed him let him do it at his pace the risk of getting food going down the wrong way and aspiration happening ..... so do it this way just like you hand rear a chick...
Bird is facing you...syringe in your right hand, your left hand's is gently around the birds head and you place the tip of the syringe on the "right" side of the beak facing you. The oesophagus is on the birds right side of the throat area and this is why when the bird facing you it's left beak area in on your right - where you are feeding from and aiming towards the right side of the back of the throat towards the oesophagus. The trachea is on the other side (so the bird's left side) next to the oesophagus and you don't want food going in that direction

Thank you for all the advice. I wasn't sure if I should restrict how many grapes he is having but he is eating them and at the moment I just want him to eat. When I use the syringe I am not really syringing it down his throat like the vet did yesterday. When he is opening his mouth to attack the syringe I am just popping a drop on his tongue or the bottom part of his beak and then he is eating it.

Dear Alfie what a terrible worry, he is lucky chap though as you and the vet are doing all you can to help him recover. Come on Alfie lad we need to hear you are recovering well xx

So sorry to hear about this Lisa. I went through something similar with Frodo over Christmas (he had a bad crop infection that took 3 courses of antibiotics to clear properly) and I know how helpless one can feel. The vet gave me a high energy formula to feed Frodo using the syringe as he had lost a lot of weight quickly. It was called Emeraid IC Omnivore. If you are worried about him getting enough nutrition it might be worthwhile asking the vet for something similar? Hope he recovers quickly.

I don't think I can leave him at the moment. Just gave him his injections and he was so lifeless. He did not fight at all and at one point didn't open his eyes.

He is now back in his cage and I am waiting to hear back from the vet. I feel like he should be in a veterinary hospital or something... I feel like I am just sitting here watching him die. One minute he looks like he is improving and then he gets worse.
