Trust Issues (Indian Ringneck)

@Roz Been keeping an eye on him and he seems to be fine.

He usually makes those squeaky sounds when he's chilling. There's always someone there in the room that talks to him aswell.

Is that the start of him learning to talk?

Also I plan on going on a shopping trip for more toys he can easily shred etc. Was thinking of putting up a thread and seeing what ideas people here come up with in setting up my cage with the new toys/perches etc. What do you think? @dianaT @DizzyBlue. Would be good to see what people come up with!

Great idea @mehul93! Also have a look at
for ideas. Plus they sell suitable toy parts like soft balsa wood pieces, paper rope, etc.

The squeaky sounds are very cute. They might be natural relaxed sounds or indeed him learning to talk! 😁

Oo okay will take a look! I think I somehow came across your YouTube channel and saw the handling spiral rope you have off your ceiling. Definitely will be looking for one of those. I'll be visiting a store that sells bird supplies so will take a look

The spring swings are so useful - I have them all over the place and definitely recommend.

It might become more popular than your chandelier! :pancarta:

It's been a while!

Hope everyone is doing well!

Since the last time I posted here there has been alot of progress. I'm still working on his diet trying to get him to eat more veggies and the fact that he completely freaks out if he sees any kind of patterned clothing, but other than that he is alot better around us.

His step up is still abit of a "ermm should I step on his finger, let me shuffle up and back to him on my perch, let me see if I can get one foot near him" process but he definitely will step up at the end. I've also been working on flight recall which is going well, started off with a small distance but he will now come to my arm from across the room. He'll also happily land and chill on my shoulder (sometimes even if I don't tell him to). He's definitely enjoying the ring perch I've put up and this week he's been alot more active and interacting alot. He is food motivated but in time I'm sure he'll do all of that to be with me.

I ordered a bunch of items to make toys for him which he has also been messing about with. He enjoys shredding the coloured paper I've got him, and foraging in a paper bag I made him!

@Roz @Michael Reynolds Here he is. Quick question, when does the longer tail feather start to appear? He did molt a pair of tail feathers but I've seen on ringneck they have the really long green pair. If you guys were to guesstimate how old he is what would you say? When I got him I was told he was around 5/6 months old (November) making him a year now theoretically.

Yes he is around a year old looking at the eye, they can develop the ring at any time between one and a half years to two and a half years old depending on how long its parentage has been in captivity. tail feathers are often replaced as these birds damage the old ones easy but each time they regrow they should develop slightly longer until maturity. he is a lovely bird and looks in great condition, i can tell by the colours of its feathers that his parentage has been in captivity for some time and i would expect him to develop in full colours at about two years old. I love Ringnecks

Sorry about the late reply! Thanks! I actually noticed the green tail feathers coming out the other day, they are still short but definitely there! He's been in a right mood today, didn't want to interact and didn't really eat. I'm guessing he's still going through his molt as I saw another feather at the bottom of his cage this morning, and he's been grooming alot today.

I've been reading up online, specifically around the lighting for the cage. Currently his cage is right under the LED ceiling lights I have. Those lights however aren't always on during the day, I was wondering would a UV light be a better solution for him? I was looking around and there are specific lights you can get for birds.

Would something like this be good? If so how long would you guys recommend having them on during the day?

@Roz @DizzyBlue @dianaT @Michael Reynolds

That is what I had for most of my birds, seem to fit on any cage easily. The ones in the specific bird room I have a double long light now, it reaches everyone and they can escape when they want some shade which I find difficult to provide with the ones attached to the cage, the rest have them.

Agree with Kendra in that it is difficult to get away from the light if it is attached to the cage or the bird can get too close to it. I prefer the floor lamps for this reason.

Yup LED doesn't provide the correct wave length of light for a bird to see properly nor does it omit the D3
I have those bolt on lights and my cages are dome top cages each light is bolted on to one side of the top of the cage. The lights have brackets that swivel so although bolted on at an angle you can have the light shining downwards in to one side of the cage enabling them to do as they please either stand in it or move away which as they are forever moving around the cage they aren't constantly in the direct light. I have the uv lights on all day from morning until roosting time without issue. The brackets help also for the light to be at the correct distance from the bird only issue is the wire and protecting it from busy beaks.

Floor lamps. hmm. Last one I bought was a really nice and expensive stainless steel (?) one, lasted 24 hours, irreparable. The black, less nice ones are OK but I do not feel they are very stable.

My cage ones sound the same Dizzy but wonder if it is the cage size, none of my cages are big now as they are never shut in, except maybe George from now on at night. Sorry, forgot about Oscar, he has huge cage and a tiny (the cage he came in, appalling) cage which he is ordered into to clean him out and to go out into the aviary

The ones I buy for the bird room are 6500, sunlight, UV, is that correct please @DizzyBlue ? They are not LED, more like fluorescents were.

Do you have the fluorescent tube ones? Long thin ones? The ones you put into antiflicker ceiling bolt on one's like a kitchen fitment? Are they bird specific ones? The reptile and fish ones are too strong.
I am thinking you may have incorrect lighting Kendra trying to work out by information you provide as to what bulb/tube your using and I keep getting reptile bulbs in which case what you have I is way too strong in emitting :( can you confirm the make so can double check?
