Think Parrots 9th June 2019

I think we're going to the one in October, apparently that one is usually the bigger one? The June one seems to be more for breeders and people looking for babies.

I think you’re thinking of the Parrot Society shows at Stafford Show Ground
@MikeJenGaryBeckyBoo,
Think Parrots is held at Kempton Park Race Course and isn’t a bird sale event, various exhibitors and stalls, plus lectures and demonstrations.

there was some lovely parrots on display but not for sale there are talks,, displays , lectures and feeds ,toys ect. missed last years but went the year before. it was there that I met the people from Johnson a Jeff and they introduced me to a mix they had on trial, I have stuck with using the same mix as my dried food side of most of my birds diet its now called lean and fit. a no nut no sunflower seed mixture that all my birds love. I think that's why I enjoyed the show as I did not get tempted to buy a parrot. bought a few books from rosemary Low and had a lovely chat with her. loved the free flying display they had pattis .

D'oh! I really should read stuff properly first shouldn't I!? [emoji23]. I'll have a look as this one online, I've been wanting to go to something like this for years, but didn't realise there was another one to choose from! Thanks @TomsMum [emoji6]

I couldn’t make last years event as I had to work on the day. Will definitely be going along this year and looking forward to it [emoji846]

I see the organisers are issuing adverts encouraging people to take their birds along to the show, either to enjoy looking round, or to be microchipped.

There is no BIOSECURITY warning accompanying this...and personally I’d think it’s a completely daft idea.

I’m really surprised that a renowned vet is letting this be done without any biosecurity information, the safest place to have microchipping done is at the veterinary surgery.

Caution ......You have no idea who is visiting the show, or whose birds are there...... you have no idea whether those birds are healthy, or whether they have been disease tested for the likes of PBFD, Psisitcid Herpes Virus, Chlamydopila Pssitaci, Avian Bornavirus,

So do consider carefully whether it is really a good idea, and really is it an environment which the bird would really enjoy?

Totally agree with @TomsMum it also provides an ideal way of getting stolen birds microchipped. I guess no anaesthetic either, possibly OK without but when you can add to other treatment at the vets and be sure it is pain free why wouldn't you?

It is amasing how many people just will not consider the possibilities of what their birds can come into contact with at these places.

I am pleased that they are promoting micro chipping but my concern is this the correct venue for such event. I have never had any of my birds Micro chipped using gas but not too many avian vets are confident in carrying out the procedure with out a slight wiff being given. I am sure the actual place that they will be chipped will be made safe and fit for the purpose. The concern of Bio security at such venues is valid and one reason I will not be taking my flock and also have a shower and a complete change of clothing before I attempt to go to any of the flock. I can only advice other to take such precautions. I do hope to go this year as I do love this event.

I exhibited my greys in an indoor aviary at the first two Think Parrots events and it was enjoyable to meet other parrot people - and a good opportunity to warn beginners not to buy an African Grey unless they are prepared to make a very serious commitment in terms of time, space and money. However, after some thought I stopped bringing them for the bio security reasons discussed above. It's a shame really as the birds really enjoyed themselves. I did see a few things that were not so great - stressed greys on harnesses, an unfortunate Amazon wearing a ridiculous nappy etc.

It’s nothing to do with the vet’s confidence.... it’s all to do with ensuring that the birds are under the least amount of stress, and towelling and holding a bird for x amount of time is stressful.
