hi All,

I will be doing a pet parrot talk in Bristol on week commencing 23rd April 2012 at Highcroft Veterinary Practice, Whitchurch, Bristol. It will be an evening talk, 7pm to 9pm. I will have some of my birds there, to demonstrate basic training for pet birds. Final date and other details to be announced soon....

Have you any talks planned up in the North East Greg?

Hi Anne Marie and everyone,

If anyone wants me to give a talk in their area, I'm always open to offers! It would be good if it could be combined with a talk by a good bird vet at the same time. Where possible, I like to bring a couple of my own birds with me to demonstrate how to do the training, including flight training. So this limits my travelling times. I live in Somerset, about 12 miles south of Bristol, but can do anywhere in the South-west/S east Wales and up to Birmingham or London or, possibly further, but with an overnight stop.

thats great. I'm going to go to the one in October which is quite near me. We do seem to have quite a few members on here in my area so maybe after that we could sort something out xx

Hi All,

Just been asked to do another talk, in Cornwall this time. It's at the Monkey Sanctuary/Wild Futures, East Looe, and is by invitation only. They are having a day of talks on exotic animals in general, and why most of them do not make good pets. The Monkey Sanct. is full of ex-pet./unwanted primates. Talk is on Sat. 12th May 2012. Contact Wild Futures on: [email protected]

Hi Evie,

I'm often in Newton Abbot area as my brother lives in Bovey Tracey. If you think you can get a few folks interested in attenting a talk, and could find a venue there where I can fly the birds, do let me know. I'll certaoinly be there; would be good to meet up with more parrot club folks etc. in Devon. Who is Ian Sayers then?

Hi Dizzy B;

What's a Skye talk; is that something done at a very high altitude perhaps...? Yorkshire is a long way north; isn't it winter up there for 13 months of the year? All snow drifts and "E' by gum tha' knows" etc.?

Cheers,

I can never understand why anyone would think a monkey was a good pet. Is it the "Friends" effect?

Hi Liz,

A few years ago, I heard a really good talk by Matt Knott of the Monkey Sanctuary when he was in Bristol. His talk re. the problems primates have as 'pets' is similar to mine re. parrotrs. So where he said the work 'monkey' you could just insert 'parrot' and it was much the same! With primates, breeders do parental deprivation, have problems with biting, noise, aggression destructive behaviours etc. And all these kick in when the monkeys reach sexual maturity at 2 to 4 years old; just like parrots. So primates get locked in cages for years, hidden away in garages, then, the lucky ones, get dumped in a sanctuary cos their carers cannot cope with them. And, like parrots they can live a long time as well.

Parrots... Primates with wings!

:dntknw: 13 months in a year ...... you're so blonde everybody knows there are only 11.75 winter months and the other 1.25 are indifferent! Nearly got me with that one!!

We maybe thunk as fick up eya laddie but if tha doesna watchit tha cud end up wiva fik eir tha nose!! Just leave our flat caps and whippets out of this!

Hey ho so I miss-spelled Skype and displayed a lack of attention to spell checker and double reading what I typed - but hey I never said I was perfect or educated in the standard education system, at least I was trying to be helpful which in my case is a major event in itself!
