Super Easy Fast Salad/veg Growing

my latest discovery is pea shoot salad.
step one- buy a packet of dried peas from supermarket (not from gardening section) I got one from asda- 250g for 50p and it has many many seeds
step two- soak seeds for 12 hours then plant 3 or 4 to a cell in seed trays. bung on windowsills.
step three- they grow like fury and at about 2 weeks are about 6 inch tall or more
step four- chop top 3 inch off and either eat raw in a salad, stir fried or steamed as a veg- or feed to parrot
step five- they will regrow and you can eat more in another couple of weeks
step six- dump the roots /compost on garden- pea roots produce natural fertiliser which is great for improving garden soil.

this really is the easiest cheapest veg /salad hack ever!

OOooOOooo like that idea going to be trying that one out :)
Moving thread over in to food and diet section don't want to loose it in the general chat
Cheers SunnyRing

Liking this even more!!
Henni loves pea shoots usually end up having to buy packs when I can get them think its pea shoot salad or something know what we will be doing in future :)

Yes, I bought some seedling peas once, grew them on in the conservatory. One day I noticed half had been nibbled, I though uh oh! mouse, so moved them and checked around but no signs. I caught the culprit the next day, tiny little Pinky, the smallest in the house had found a way to get to the seedlings and showed she loved them. I did eventually put some in the tunnel only to see them eaten my mice.

Think there are going to be a lot of dried pea's being bought having seen this :)
Do love a show and tell session as it makes it all the easier to understand. Dried peas are on my next shopping list.

another very easy/fast windowsill crop is cress. not as cheap as you do need to buy 'proper' seed but super easy.
wheat grass too is an easy quick one for birds- just buy small bag wheat- sow and few weeks later lovely fat grassy blades ready to feed.
o with all this stuff don't bother with fancy seed compost- cheapest compost will do as you are not trying to make healthy adult plants- they will be scoffed long before deplete the nutrients in cheapo compost

Brilliant...thanks sunnyring, Chiko, likes pea shoots and they are expensive to buy from the salads section in the supermarket, and don’t keep well.

I can see that along with my trays of salad greens that I always have three trays on the go … one in the aviary one starting to sprout and the next one partly grown ready to throw in the aviary there's going to be a heap load other stuff.
Odd I can grow plants in soil but cannot use one of those sprouters to start things in jars they always just turn to mush and get fungus on them straight away... Defo going to stick to tray growing stuff now you have "planted the seed" of an idea :)

I am a bit nervous of sprouting as I know if you get it wrong they can get some dangerous moulds etc. tray growing is easier!

Seek and follow Roz's instructions hun, she sorted me out, I like you was a little nervous and once you have one good batch you are off. Jason Crean also advises to soak in GSE and also do the final rinse in GSE.

I will add some to my Tesco shop, give them a try but bet my lot won't touch them.

@TomsMum those are the ones I bought mine were from ASDA
Have also decided to set some sweetcorn on to go, I used to grow it a few years ago.
Similar preparation but always plant in a bucket three seedlings together in a triangle shape so they pollenate each other. Picked a couple of decent kernels out of the seed mix but you can get that from the supermarket too as long as its a whole kernel and undamaged just dried.
Garden is going to look more like an allotment this year I can see.

:BangHead::BangHead: need flipping eyes in the back of my head!!!
Disaster just struck the soaking peas ….. errrr Henni must have thought it was a new form of apple bobbing! She's just hauled them all out and eaten them :watchout: just put another load in to soak … hopefully these will make it to morning and the possibility of being planted …. I live in hope!
