Strange Growth

Think we have about gone through all possibilities that we can from just viewing the picture
One thing we all do agree on is thats one very pretty ammie :feel_loved:

Update:

Hi all

He made it back from his visit to the vet.

He said it's one biggest he has seen but he thinks it is lipoma. He said if it is, it's like a fatty tissue that has built up into a mass.

He said it's pretty common in amazons and a few other types of birds who are obese, which he is. He was weighed but I can't remember exactly how much my mum said they told her.

He has done a fine needle biopsy just to be sure. So fingers crossed that will come back clear.

In the meantime he has said to diet him because this can reduce the size of lipoma.

He said to try to wean him off his full seed diet and onto a high quality complete pellet diet which only contains only the fats and nutrients he needs along with fruit and veg. He said to limit greens and give him a good amount of red veg which contain a lot of vitamin A.

He said if the lab results come back and it is lipoma and the diet is reducing it, he would try to avoid surgery because the mass itself isn't a danger.

He said if he becomes irritated by it or it causes other problems (like with his vent) then they can consider removing it.

Thank you for the update, fingers crossed the biopsy is clear, and that with the changed diet reduces in size.
do keep us up to date.

That's awesome news :)
Don't hold your breath on the pellets situation though my lot won't touch them so I feed a seed diet that is lower in fat no peanuts no sunflowers the seed content is of a smaller variety so takes longer to husk and eat plus added in the veggies and lots more out of cage time plus they have milk thistle seed offered all the time as that helps reduce fatty liver issues which usually runs hand in hand with the excess fat he is carrying.
I took on two male amazons both with diet related issues neither touch pellet and would rather starve to death it would seem both had fatty liver issues and both had lets just say excessive spare tyres!!
The fact that there will be no McDonalds on offer etc is going to make things a heck of a lot easier to reduce the fatty intake.
Onwards and upwards :)

More crossed fingers for a clear biopsy!

Over the last few months I got my Red-lored Amazon, Bobbie, to lose 30+gms. I also got her to eat small Harrisons pellets by mixing some with her sprouts (just a little to start with) or you can try mixing some with his fruit and veggies if you aren't feeding sprouts. Chico and Joe Joe (also Amazons) will eat these pellets mixed this way too. I think they like them as they look like seeds. They do get a little seed, other pellets and tree nuts (walnuts are full of Omega 3, and Omega 3 can actually help with weight loss - in small quantities!) in a separate bowl, but I only slot in the "dry" bowl an hour or so after they've had a good munch on their "fresh" bowls. These are the pellets I use for mixing with their fresh food:
None of them will touch the coarse Harrisons pellets that are in their dry bowls, but Bobbie and Chico like TOPs:
I wouldn't remove seed entirely as he is in a new home with new people and maybe new cage, etc. He needs some food he can recognise.

If you want to try sprouting, here is a thread about it. Because they are similar in shape to seeds many parrots take to them quite quickly. All mine eat sprouts:

Great news that it’s benign, good luck with dieting him❤️It’s so good he has home now with people who care

That's wonderful news
Fitter healthier lifestyle with lots of things to occupy his/her mind ahead :)
although I think I still need to book in for mental health issues as still having nightmare thoughts about the McDonalds information

Great to hear the growth is benign. I guess dieting is safer than an op. Fingers crossed for him.
