I too have no idea of what makes my Amazon sneeze, and what starts it off.

18months...he had an infected periorbital sinus (the one that runs around the eye socket) and had to have an orperation to drain it...this seems to have left him with very sensitive upper respiratory tract....so some days he sneezes and has clear nasal discharge...we wipe his nares to ensure he doesn't get them blocked, and nebulise as necessary. He will always have these issues...the vet thinks it is a result of an infection when he was a chick, as he has stunted choanal papillae. Amazons and Pionus can be more susceptible to respiratory issues than other species.

How many times a day does he sneeze?

It's very variable....and tends to be it patches, first thing after he gets up, and often after he's eaten, he's betternwhen he's had time out and done some flying around and climbing and swinging around. There's no real pattern to it though.

Thanks. That's interesting and very similar to Tangos sneezing except she doesn't sneeze from evening to later in the morning.
I'm going to give her a course of guardian angel and see if it changes things.
Has anyone got any advice about guardian angel?

Ive read all the advice and have temporarily taken Tangos pellets out and am giving her seed fruit and hard boiled egg.
Her sneezing has reduced since yesterday in fact she hasn't sneezed since 1.28 and its now 3.12
My reasoning behind the erratic sneezing could be that she doesnt eat later in the evening and the sneezing stops. She wakes up and eats and within 3 hours she starts to sneeze. I will report back. She vdoes scratch sometimes but Im not sure if it is abnormal or just her.

    I will report back

Fingers crossed it might be diet related... maybe colour in the pellets?

I have already written about Kobe further back - I have never got to the bottom of why despite many vet visits. It seems to be seasonal. He starts in the mornings just before I take his covers off. It gets better through the day and not usually in the evenings.

I don't think I mentioned Ollie though. Ollie came to me with respiratory problems - sinusitis, a collapsed nostril, inflammed air sacs and aspergillosis. When he first arrived he would sneeze about once a minute or every few minutes all day every day and quite a lot of the night... I don't know how he wasn't exhausted. As he got better the sneezing lessened until now when he sneezes maybe just a few times a day. It took months if not years for the sneezing to slowly die down.

Make sure Tango is getting plenty of beta carotene (precursor to Vit A) in her diet since it helps the mucus membranes... richly coloured veggies and fruit - carrot, sweet potato, dark green leaves, papaya, mango, orange melon, peppers, chillies, etc.

Interesting Chiko has stunted choanal papillae, @TomsMum - Kobe has too - a sign of Vit A deficiency... at least when they were young. The choanal papillae never grow back so can't be a judge of future Vit A levels.

That's what we were told too, although DizzyBlue's vet says he can see improvement in one of her Ammies.

I try to make sure Chiko has as much VitA stuff as I can...some days he's very good, other days sweet potato and butternut squash are evil! Shame Cobnuts don't have any VitA content...they are his favourite at the moment!

Well she has only sneezed once all afternoon. Yesterday she sneezed 20 times.
It's too early to say yet as she mad start up again any time but I'm hoping this is it.
What food mix do other Macaw owners use?

She is back to sneezing again.
We have removed her old food yesterday lunch time. I wonder how long until it leaves her system, but I now doubt its the food but will leave her off it today and see what happens.

Yesterday she sneezed about a third less than the previous couple of days so I'm keeping her off her pellet diet again today to see if she is still detoxing. It could just be coincidence that she sneezed less. I will see how she is today.

It so difficult to nail down the cause isn't it. Do keep us posted though.

The strange thing is that her morning first poop always smelt bad, now she is off the pellets it smells OK

Hmm I am not a fan of pellets but many are.

Well. It's not the pellets and it's not the room she is in.
I've put her on vitamins and echinacea to see if they help.

its something I have come across with my Jackie in the past and I had forgotten. Jackie loves harrisons but I had restricted her feed mainly to a fruity parrot mix and fruit and veg owing to sneezing when I first had her. she still gets the power treats on occasions but no other harrisons products. have not tried the other macaws with pellets but I am sure diet could be one reason that some birds may sneeze.

We took her off the pellets for a fewdays and it made no difference. So not the food

Could need longer though as it needs to get out of the whole system?
The parrots I hear of who do a lot of sneezing are always on some sort of pellets, unless any one else knows otherwise?
