Skin issues, legs and feet.

Hi all, I wonder if any one here can advise on an issue that I have with one of my Cockatiels. This appeared to start with what I thought was a graze to his left leg and left foot. I tried Savlon for a few days then Salt Water for a few more days then I got some Leucillin spray. I thought we were making progress as the conditioned appeared to improve, dry up an scab over. However after a few more day it seemed to go back to something like the fresh graze, wet, red and sore. I assumed he had bashed it again or picked at it. He now has a sore spot on his other foot, so I am assuming it not a graze and some sort of skin issue. He had a similar cut/sore on his left leg and that has healed up. I cut the feathers off his leg so I could apply the cream and see what was happening.

Hi, welcome to the forum. I would say go and get him checked out by an avian vet, especially as there are open wounds. He may well need antibiotics? It could be a mite problem, and if he's itchy or sore he'll nibble and damage the skin. It would turn into a vicious circle. Also, if he's not your only bird, maybe separate him from the others in case it's something that can be passed on? No doubt someone else will be able to advise further :) Hope the little guy is ok!

I made a collar for him yesterday, he seemed to have pecked it open again. I also got a better picture of his feather condition. He's got Moulting fluid in his water and feather care treats. He has another water with calcium added and it also got some stress relieving additive in it. I also gave him a very very light spray of feather plume. Hoping that the aloe vera and tea tree help. Any thoughts?

I think your best bet it so wait & see what the avian vet diagnoses and gives you to use.
Additional advice may be available from https://birdcareco-shop.com/ they will advise if they can although any treatments must be declared to the vet.

If your bird’s legs appear very dry, scaly, and show white deposits it could be mites, but only your vet would be able to tell you for sure. If I were you, I would contact the vet and tell them what is happening and see if they can either move up your appointment, phone you if they have a cancellation, and can they suggest something you can do at home in the meantime.

They are very busy, a Covid backlog they said, they squeezed me in a week earlier than first appointment.

Oh, sorry, you did mention that before. It was very good of them to squeeze you in earlier. It is too bad you cannot ask them for some advice. I can just imagine how hard this must be seeing your baby like this.

No need to be sorry, it was mentioned in second post, but no issue at all. Grateful for any suggestions or comments. They have seen the pictures and as long as he is eating and drinking they will stick to the Tuesday appointment. I suspect they only have 1 avian / exotic vet, but they are open 24/7 as they have severial branches.

It make me upset that I can't do much to help him. It's better if at least I stay here with him, I lost one last year, I was out trying to save the planet from litter. I realised that the 20 or so sacks that I collected that weekend cost me a very special bird. I still blame myself and the litter was back in a couple of weeks.

Wendy is absolutely right - you are doing your best and you are taking your baby in to get looked at by a vet. They should be able to help stop the itching and get your baby feeling better.

Put tape around the inside of that collar you made it its going to slice into the back of his neck due to the entire weight resting on the back.
