Off topic but thought its important people are aware got a call from what was meant to be my phone provider yesterday saying my direct debit had bin cancelled in error could i please set it back up that they was sending me a code to give to them (which my phone people usually do). Got the code it came threw as my phone provider so i gave it them spent an extra 10 mins setting up my direct debit thought nomore of it until i checked my bank today. These people got round the system an stole more than a few thousand off me. They got into my bank an withdrew the cash. The code i gave was actually giving them complete acess to all my details.
0330 220 4401 is the number who called me please no one else be fooled.

So sorry @Zoe220615. Really hope you get your money back. They certainly can be so believable!

I got scammed re the computer a few years ago - thankfully I got my money back. A man with similar requests rang me a few weeks ago. This time I pretended to go along with it, and made myself sound really thick and not sure about computers. After about 10 minutes of winding him up, whilst making the parrots' breakfast, he asked me what my computer said. I said, pretending to struggle to read, "it says, this is a scam". He immediately rang off.

Oh Zoe how these frauds can trick people, I know just how you fill as i have been through a similar problem when lots of monies had been taken from my account through cloning of the card at a machine., yes it was a few thousand but i never recovered the monies. this happened the day before the Scarlets meeting, hopefully the monies will be repaid as there are more protection now,

That is awful @Zoe220615 I hate seeing good people being treated bad and being scammed!!!
That Wats app message is utterly disgusting.
I really hope you get your money back. These people need locking up.

Xx
The number was traced to abroad so i doubt much will happen to them wont be caught.

Most of these scam calls are from Asia where there is no regulation, and no way of stopping them.

We regularly get calls saying that our annual Amazon Prime is running out and it needs to be renewed. We pay monthly, so I know it's a scam, but if we did pay annually I would sort it out online. We also get calls about BT - we are no BT customers.

I occasionally get calls that could be genuine and they start asking security questions. I refuse to answer them, because they called me. I explain that if I call my bank, phone provider, etc, I would expect them to ask questions to prove my identity, so when it is the other way around, I think it is reasonable for me to ask the questions and for them to know the answers.

If you have a landline that you get a call like this on then make sure you get a dial tone before dialling out. The old trick they used on landlines was to mute you but not put their phone down so people would hang up and then dial out and they just unmuted the phone and pretended to be the correct company 😡

I never use my landline its not even plugged in

Use the customer service phone number that is shown on their website.

If it is a genuine call from a company that you have dealings with, this is what they will tell you to do. Do not use an address that the caller gives you and do not use a clickable link in an email. Scammers can easily give you to a fake website.

It used to be possible to have your phone number added to the telephone preference service (TPS) to stop unsolicited calls. Genuine UK based companies use this service and will not call you if your phone number is on that list. If you get an unsolicited call from a UK based company and you say that you are on the TPS, they usually apologise and end the call very quickly. I think that the laws have changed in the last few years and unsolicited calls are illegal, whether you are on TPS or not, so only unscrupulous companies will make unsolicited calls to you - just hang up.

Another thing to watch is when you sign up to a website. It used to be that companies would opt you in to marketing contact by default, but I think now that the default must be that you are opted out. You do have to be careful though - a lot of companies use 'double negatives' in these options and it is easy to opt in when you really mean to opt out.

I just ignore all phone calls/emails I do not knows, I am often in trouble for this but I would rather be safe. If they are honest they do eventually find you
