Salt lamps

Evening all,

Just a quick one on salt lamps and parrots. My boyfriend has bought me a large pyramid himalayan salt lamp for our living room for my birthday but im unsure of the impact of these and parrots.

It's electric, not candle based and claims to purify air trapping allergens bacteria and mould. Never owned one before so unsure if they work but think they look nice and love the warm glow from them, just wondered if anyone knows if these are safe around parrots? If not it will be put in another room upstairs.

Thanks all!

Just to add to my first message, don't plan on using this to purify our air, wanted one more for a different nice lamp type item.

Looking at air purifiers for the dust etc 😊
Just wanted to make sure when this is turned on it won't harm the birds in any way.

Do I ! If I do I've forgotten!:buenrollo:
I have always fancied to have one although would have got the electric one as unsure re any possible candle fumes. Also I understand you must not let parrots close enough to be able to lick the lamp.

Thank you.
Yeah the lamp is not close enough for the birds to get a cheeky bite. Glad that this is okay to have though as they are lovely!

Pretty but errr totally useless seems to be the given consensus in science terms.
Everybody with their sensible hat on is lovely to see the danger being not just the cables but also the salt for our birdies :)
If anybody fancies a bit of a read live science had a look at them on this link … not to scientific but does give some useful thoughts

Some twit is claiming it will kill off this virus …. which it won't! DOH!

And on that note please remember that if your disinfecting absolutely everything remember that some products are harmful to our feathered friends so be very careful with disinfectants and those hand gel things …. I'm using heaps of soap and water for me basically a ruddy good scrubbing if I have been out and about (as am looking after elderly parents as they have been on lock down for a while now with mum having IPF) and F10SC for my birdies. Stay safe peeps x

I used to have a salt lamp but it seemed to gather condensation so we got rid of it. I have read that soap and water is better than most hand gels (as most dont have a high enough alchohol content) but soap breaks down the cellular structure of the virrus. F10SC is brilliant for spraying birdie stuff,

Haha yeah, i had the same thought before getting one that they seem pretty but useless also! Got a lovely leaflet with it telling me how it makes the air pure and better and also helps with sleep.
Glad i don't believe that and just like the nice glow from the lamp 😂

Put it on the stand near the TV which is closer to the window and also far from the bird cages as our room is very long. Putting the cable in one of them plastic things which hides cables to stop beaks getting interested in a new toy.

Good point with the bleach etc, have done the same as you and used soap and water for a good clean in the bird rooms. Didn't think of using F10 on stuff in the room with the birds to clean, that's a good idea especially that we know it's 100% bird safe.
Always made people wash their hands before handling the birds so there is no change there for us.

Stay safe too and thanks for the reply! X

Re the salt lamps they become wet if there is moisture in the room they are in, ie pull the moisture out of the air so a good indicator that a dehumidifier could be required? Hubby left mine in the garage (duh) it was pretty wet for a bit. Yes as with anything that is not bird safe keep out of their reach. I love mine if provides a lovely warm glow to the hallway.

Yeah we used to have loads of candles and i loved the cosy glow on an evening but because of the birds we no longer have them, the boyfriend thought it would be a nice gift to have that warm glow again.
If any of the birds show interest at any time will move it into another room. I put it on last night to see if it works and even the rabbit stood staring at it 😂

Will keep all beaks and little teeth well away from it haha!

Would like to point out that nothing 'kills' any virus, they are not alive in the first place.

No, but they can be neutralized if the protein / fat 'shell' is damaged / removed like with soap & water, so the DNA / RNA strand is exposed. (School does a few micro biology lessons I've listened to many times from the prep-rooms in the difference between bacteria & viruses.)

Mum's got one of those salt lamps, she didn't believe me when I told her it was a lump of natural salt & mostly the same stuff as table salt (the pink is usually caused by iron oxide in the deposit) so she licked a piece (I wouldn't have let her if I knew in case of other contaminants) to taste it.
School's shut (except for key worker's kids & safeguarding with reduced staffing levels to minimise exposure) so I have loads more time for my parroty research.

Nothing meant by it, like I said just listening to lessons (high school age) where teachers say difference between bacteria & virus is bacteria are cells viruses are genes in a protein casing. I know there's plenty people know better than me (my education stopped at BSc Chem & any biology is my weakest science), was just repeating what the teachers say when they explain why washing with soap & water works.
