Recommendations for Bird Safe Disinfectant please….

This might sound like a stupid question but please can you recommend a good disinfectant for cleaning the cage, bowls, toys and water bottles etc..

At the moment I’m using Avicare and it’s doing a brilliant job but a litre isn’t lasting very long at all so it’s getting expensive. I don’t have a huge budget like a lot of people these days but I want to do the best I can for my babies. I saw one 5L bottle for birds and it was £101 plus change and delivery 😳😳😳.

I’ve been looking at a few different options but it’s hard to choose the right one as a large amount of disinfectants say pet safe but no mention of birds just cats and dogs. I’ve also read something about white vinegar and hot water, is this any good for the cage and food pots? I use neat white vinegar on my decking to kill the algea, to stop me slipping when I feed the wild birds but I’ve never thought about using it for my birds cage care. My sister brings it from Holland for me as it’s only £2 for 5L over there compared to £12 here.

Anyway any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance

Good old fashioned washing up liquid and hot water for bowls. Anything needing extra I use Poop Off or F10 which is always made up and ready to use in a spray bottle. Water bottles, not sure hun, they need to be tip top, perhaps someone else can chime on that one?
Occasionally I put the bowls through the DW if they are getting stained re Lou's Mash. Toys are usually cleaned in washing up liquid too with the extra spray of F10 at the end.

I agree with @plumsmum . Some dishes go in the dishwasher or a good wash with hot water etc. F10 is very good to use too especially for cage cleaning. I have never used white vinegar for them.

I keep a 50/50 mix of apple cider vinegar and water in a spray bottle. It works great. Sometimes you might need to let a tough dirty spot (on a cage, for example) sit with vinegar for several minutes. I usually wipe with paper towels (sometimes torn into halves or quarters, to save towels), but a kitchen sponge is also great if you need to scrub.

I've tried one specific bird cage cleaner spray and cage-scrubber sponge, but neither product was extremely better than my vinegar/water mix and regular sponge. However, I am glad to see companies trying to appeal to bird owners; not just cat- and dog-owners. And I say this as a loving dog owner!

I have dogs too so I was hoping to find something that’s good for both. I’ve made an enquiry tonight about a natural product that’s from a company called HOCL Health. Apparently it kills 99.99% of germs.

These are their selling points:

  • Instant on contact kill
  • Food safe
  • pH neutral
  • No harmful effect on humans, animals and the environment
  • Cruelty free
  • Vegan friendly
Hopefully they will get back to me pretty soon and when they do I’ll let you know what they say 🌻🌻🌻

Yes same here, i use F10SC As well, it's not cheap but it does go a long way, I normally use it at 500-1 (2ml per litre of water, so 200ml bottle will make gallons, to early for maths :) ) and it's safe for pretty much everything. (link here that explains https://www.meadowsah.com/f10sc-veterinary-disinfectant

I also use F10SCXD (which has detergent in it) for cleaning the muckier bits, but this needs to be rinsed afterwards if it's for bowls or anything like that.

Washing up liquid for food & water bowls.

Diluted white vinegar for the regular cleaning of perches & cages.

F10 ready-to-use spray for items where I am concerned about germs and other nasties - eg tree branches brought in from outside & used for perches, the hospital cage when a bird has been ill or whenever I am feeling paranoid (it happens).

@AngelaF
Apple cider vinegar does the job just fine. Cheap to purchase from the supermarket.
Water it down to one part apple cider vinegar to four parts water.
Johnson's do a cheap and effective spray that's bird safe if a little on the eye popping bright weird colour scale of you prefer to have a "brand name"

Thank you everyone I really appreciate all your comments, still no response from the natural detergent company but it’s only been a couple of days. Hopefully they will respond eventually.

brilliant thank you that’s a very interesting read, I’ll watch the video later too, I like the sound of the scdx as an all in one solution.

Just be careful, it ends up being an all in one solution for the house, we use it on floors and carpets and it's a fantastic mould remover in the outhouse as well, I'm pretty much, "got a mark, get the F10" now :watchout:

I gave in and bought the 200ml f10 sdxd to try and see how far it goes. I’ll use the avicare for my water and food containers and the f10 for the cage and once the avicare is done I’m going to use Apple cider vinegar and water for the water and food containers because I’m paranoid about bacteria after Daisy got sick and died, it plays on my mind over and over again that despite everything I did and was told to do wasn’t good enough, bleSS her little feathers, I miss her a lot….enough said time for bed, night night 🌻🌻🌻
