Hello guys, I hope everyone is well.

I have an 11 month old Derbyan Parakeet that I got 2 days ago from someone local to me, she is so cute and a sweetheart. Anyway, I spoke to some people over Facebook and they said her toys are dangerous that are in her cage. Now, I want to replace them ASAP with suitable once but for the life of me, can't find any in the UK weather that is me being stupid (probably is) but I was wondering if any of you guys could recommend a UK site that doesn't require international shipping due to COVID-19. Please help, I am very much so in need of some toys. It would mean a lot.

Regards,
Jamie

Hi!

Try northernparrots.com or scarlettsparrotessentials.co.uk

Always buy from either of these two places and never had any issues 😅

I’ve looked at a few toys on both sites and from what I’ve researched, they mainly sell bird touch which are dangerous or they don’t provide enough info on what things are made with. 😩

Could you maybe explain what it is particularly about the toys you've seen that you believe to be dangerous?

The wood, that is coloured, it doesn’t say what it was dyed with. The string isn’t really good either. 🤷‍♂️

The wood will be coloured with food colouring as most parrot toys are because it is safe to use. You can confirm this by emailing the company. Both are pretty good customer service wise. Not sure exactly what string youre on about but natural fibres like jute, hemp or sisal is fine to use with birds too and for them to chew. Avoid cotton and fabric as its dangerous if ingested. Again if you have worries about anything in particular people on here can help but also try just contacting the company and asking, they're usually really helpful

Did they say why they are dangerous? ok toys that are meant for budgies should not be given to bigger birds, the type of clips that are used may be the problem, it may help if you can post a photo of the cage and its set up

I second scarletts or nothern parrots thats where i buy most of my toys never had an issue an all really well priced. Post up some pictures before you buy new ones would be ashame to waste them if there ok to be used.

We use Scarletts for all of our toys, they have a good number of macaws themselves and use their own toys for their own birds. We've also used Northern Parrots in the past. I'm just basically echoing what others have said in that the dye used is parrot safe food dye, and natural string and ropes. You have to make sure you're choosing relevant toys for your size bird, and make sure you monitor the state of the toys as they get played with and destroyed. Looking forward to seeing pics of your new baby!

Also try https://www.naturalbirdco.co.uk/ - they have great toys. They also sell toy parts so that you can make your own. I usually string different things on leather strips. The wood they sell (pine and balsa) are dyed with safe dyes.

I'll definitely second Natural Bird Co, their customer service is the best and they are only too happy to tailor to your birds needs.
