Can anyone advise me on how to cheer up my poorly girl?? I was so excited when she was coming home with us and was naively thinking the worst was now behind us but the fear is a tight ball in my stomach about how she is responding to all the stress! The poor thing is having to be grappled in a towel twice a day and is putting up one hell of a fight. She generally rolls onto her back and grabs the towel with her feet whilst furiously beating her wings.. I have put a willow branch in her feet/beak but it’s still pretty messy and she generally manages to escape the towel with her head at least once. After she is completely subdued and her wings droop and has no interest in food or drink which is my biggest worry. We are back at the vets tomorrow late afternoon. Her wound seems to be healing well, but what with the collar on her neck, being grabbed twice a day and will be for up to another 11 days I just don’t know if it’s all going to be too much for her
We put her in a warm dark room over night, and are keeping her warm in the daytime. Dread to think what our energy bill is going to be! In the daytime I sit nearby, occasionally having a little chat.. food wise not really interested in anything . I syringed In some baby apple and mango purée this morning and some flat lucozade (suggested by vet). The very sight of anything resembling a blanket or a towel sends her into a nervous frenzy. She is chattering a bit more to me and is preening which I am taking as big positives...It might be best just to keep her somewhere quiet and warm so she can heal.
Offer her her favourite foods if she's allowed them and talk to her softly.
Keep part of the cage covered over so she has somewhere safe to hide to if she feels threatened.
I think I’m going to make a t-bar and buy another set of scales just for her. Thank you for your adviceTry her with scrambled egg.
For scales I just use kitchen scales. Digital ones.
Use a small travel cage. Easiest way to do it is to weigh the cage first or if you can handle her easy then put the cage on the scales. Set it to zero then put her in the cage.
Make sure the cage is completely on the scales though and not leaning on anything else. Then give it a few seconds for her to settle down as the movement will change the weight.
I would advise weighing her daily at current and if she continues to loose the weight see if the vet will hospitalise her and crop fed her.
