Poorly Amazon Parrot

Not sure if anyone has got any top tips to help, @Michael Reynolds has been fab so far, but it would appear my wily girl is a bit too smart for grapes and Ribena! Poor Eddie is struggling to sleep properly as she can’t tuck her head behind her due to the collar she has on to stop her going for her stitches. This morning we attempted to towel her and it went wrong and she was understandably fuming with us. We eventually managed to get her and syringe meds in but only after I attempted putting it in Ribena on a spoon.. one taste and she tried to throw it.. she now won’t take anything off a spoon from me so isn’t really drinking.. whenever I go anywhere near her she is really hissing at me, and I’m the only one that usually can touch her.. how can I get her trust back quickly so that I don’t have to syringe in food/liquids and medication?! We are keeping her in her travel cage as I don’t think I would be able to get her out of her normal cage and also it’s easy to put somewhere warm and cosy 24/7, and have pushed her perch as close to the side as I can so that she can rest her head against the side if she topples forward 😕

She was taking honey water off the spoon the other day, but doesn’t trust me with anything at all now 😕

Keep offering her the spoon with goodies on it. She may be wary of it and want nothing to do with it but you need to give her time with it. The same with the syringe. See if you can get some extras from the vets and use those with squash in then to get her to accept the syringe.

It's not easy and does take time.

If however you need to medicate her daily at the minute then I wouldn't bother faffing about it with it. Just get the room dark so she can't see to struggle. Towel her, turn the light on and give her the meds then put her back. The more you do it the quicker you will be able to get at it. By having the room dark she can't see as well to move away. Always have someone by the light switch if you can though.

Have been reading through this thread. Such a roller coaster of news and emotions! I'm so pleased that Eddie(etta) lol ;) is on the mend. You're perseverance and patience have been admirable, now you'll still be showing this perseverance and patience in convincing your little girl that it was all for her own good. Hopefully she'll come round quickly :feel_loved:

Can anyone advise me on how to cheer up my poorly girl?? I was so excited when she was coming home with us and was naively thinking the worst was now behind us but the fear is a tight ball in my stomach about how she is responding to all the stress! The poor thing is having to be grappled in a towel twice a day and is putting up one hell of a fight. She generally rolls onto her back and grabs the towel with her feet whilst furiously beating her wings.. I have put a willow branch in her feet/beak but it’s still pretty messy and she generally manages to escape the towel with her head at least once. After she is completely subdued and her wings droop and has no interest in food or drink which is my biggest worry. We are back at the vets tomorrow late afternoon. Her wound seems to be healing well, but what with the collar on her neck, being grabbed twice a day and will be for up to another 11 days I just don’t know if it’s all going to be too much for her 😢😢

It might be best just to keep her somewhere quiet and warm so she can heal.

Offer her her favourite foods if she's allowed them and talk to her softly.

Keep part of the cage covered over so she has somewhere safe to hide to if she feels threatened.

We put her in a warm dark room over night, and are keeping her warm in the daytime. Dread to think what our energy bill is going to be! In the daytime I sit nearby, occasionally having a little chat.. food wise not really interested in anything 😕. I syringed In some baby apple and mango purée this morning and some flat lucozade (suggested by vet). The very sight of anything resembling a blanket or a towel sends her into a nervous frenzy. She is chattering a bit more to me and is preening which I am taking as big positives...

I have one towel colour that I use for if I have to hold a bird for treatment and hold a bird in my case it is a yellow towel. the birds do not like the yellow towel so I use it to keep them away from places I do not want them to go. they are not frightened of scared of other towels it just the yellow ones they are weary of. Ha Ha

Another trip to the vets and all still a bit up in the air.. he is pleased with the way she is healing but she has lost about 50g since Friday and also concerned about her apathy and tiredness. Has given me some critical care to use to try and build her back up. He didn’t want to give her the meds because he said it would be over 2 hours early so will now have the stress of being towelled 3 times in a day. Her collar has to stay put until Friday 😔

50g is quite a lot for Eddie to loose along with the critical care try to get her to eat any thing to help her get back to eating again

He did wonder whether he had used the same scales.. can anyone recommend some scales that I can buy?

She has had a corn on the cob and has had a good do at that today. Doesn’t like peas.. we put it down to the fact none of the males in our house liked peas but can’t use that excuse any more! Feeling very low and guilty that we should never have had her if we can’t even give her medication and look after her 😥

Try her with scrambled egg.

For scales I just use kitchen scales. Digital ones.

Use a small travel cage. Easiest way to do it is to weigh the cage first or if you can handle her easy then put the cage on the scales. Set it to zero then put her in the cage.
Make sure the cage is completely on the scales though and not leaning on anything else. Then give it a few seconds for her to settle down as the movement will change the weight.

I would advise weighing her daily at current and if she continues to loose the weight see if the vet will hospitalise her and crop fed her.

I think I’m going to make a t-bar and buy another set of scales just for her. Thank you for your advice
