Poorly Amazon Parrot

Have taken him to Manor Vets which is closer to home. They are taking him in tomorrow for x-Ray/blood tests and to take a crop culture and see if they can get it moving. Vet thinks it is possibly a yeast infection. I’m so scared I’m going to lose him 😢
Out of interest to you know which vet it is there? I use them occasionally but I used to use Marie kubiak who has unfortunately left.

Got my fingers crossed for you x

Eddie has gone in for x-Ray and bloods, with flush of crop and removal of any obstruction. Vet is concerned that Eddie appears to have the bone structure of a female about to lay an egg. Except Eddie came with a DNA test showing he was male?! The crop was clear but there is a thickening of the crop so they are going to do a biopsy. Vet is concerned that this may be testicular cancer 😢😥. Does anyone have any experience of this at all?? Hoping that maybe Eddie is in fact female and she is about to lay an egg which is why he/she is tired...

Oh poor Eddie, good the crop is clear, but I've not heard about the other suggestions made by the vet, apart of course from egg laying. Will you get more information later today from him. Fingers crossed whatever it is will be easily treatable.

DNA can be wrong. My sun conure was DNA'd Male and turned out female. I almost lost her last year as she got egg bound and not thinking the problem was she was male., I do hope Eddie is female,

If you didn't do the DNA yourself then I wouldn't put 100% trust in it. I do all my own DNA sexing even if the bird comes with one. Purely as you can't be certain there wasn't cross contamination unless you do it yourself.

If he's going in for an x-ray then I assume this will show if there is an egg.

Keeping everything crossed for you x

I did my own DNA with Rickie, Its still only 99.9% accurate, like humans they can carry some jeans from both the father and mother. One of my superb parrots had tested female but I know now it is male, although it developed a year after my other male and both born in the same month and year.

Ok, so weird question... when Eddie has “sexy time” he kind of puts his head down and his tail in the air and his vent kind of pulsates...is this male or female behaviour or do they do the same thing?! He makes a very odd kind of like a squeaky toy crossed with a shrill?!

I would phone your vet and let them know, it sounds as if your bird may be egg bound, may need a higher dose of calcium in the diet but the vets can help Eddie.

This is normally female behavior in amazons
Searched on YouTube and found something a bit like what Eddie does and said an Amazon on heat.. bit shell shocked 😮. Vet didn’t mention that he had seen an egg on x-Ray, just that he would have thought Eddie was a female about to produce an egg based on bone structure. This is good news in a way as at least not testicular cancer! Just to get to the bottom of why Eddie is so poorly and weak now. Going for appointment at 5.30pm so will update then. Thank you all for your help. Hope the hospital appointment went well @Michael Reynolds xx

An egg or cancer will look quite alike with an xray. ok there is another little problem if Eddie is a female I will post that shortly

Yes so far a very happy hospital staff in the progress of the wound healing, they removed all the stiches. I am about two weeks quicker than normal with the healing progress.
Am I correct in thinking your bird is a Yellow crowned Amazon Latin name Amazona ochrocephala, if so it is a CITES 1 bird, did you have defra paperwork with the bird. if it is female you may have to inform them, they are very helpful, but I will say I have not had a endangered bird that turns out to be a different sex

Lovely photo, to be honest I cannot say for certain as no red in the wings showing and the white around the eye is more like a mearly amazon that a yellow crowned although the yellow crowned will have white around the eye. I think it is best to wait till Parrot797 looks at the photo, he looks in every so often @DizzyBlue what do you think?

Eddie has small amount of red on the top part of his wings. I’ll see if I can get some more pictures later when he is home. I take it I only need defeat paperwork if I ever wanted to sell him?

Don’t know if these help?
