Poorly Amazon Parrot

Hello. Wonder if someone can help? I have a 12 year old yellow crowned Amazon called Eddie. We brought a budgie for my daughter who died unexpectedly at the end of October after having him since May. We got another one about 4 weeks ago from the same breeder. All seemed well except for an upset tummy that seemed to clear up when we put ACV in her water. On Christmas Day, she was puffed up and sleepy, by 6pm she had died. I then realised Eddie hadn’t been his usual self, nowhere near as vocal, and really sleepy in the day. Had put down his few runny poos down to more vegetables and fruit that I had been giving to both of the birds. Boxing Day I took him to the vet who said he thought It was giardia -and gave me wormer and antibiotics to give him via a syringe. This went pear shaped with me getting more on me than him. By now he has not eaten and or actively drunk anything for days, so took back to the vets after a disastrous attempt to towel him and adminster after watching YouTube videos. Have taken him back each day for meds.
still not eating and he has lost so much weight. Tried to tempt him with grapes/apple juice/scrambled eggs and only nibbled at a grape. Tried to find an avian vet but they all seem to be vets with exotic qualifications, is that the same thing?? Worried about tonight as none of the vets even have that qualification... worried The stress is going to kill him. please please help! I live near Stourbridge, can anyone recommend an avian vet please?

So sorry to hear all of this. I am told there is an excellent avian vet here
Maybe give them a ring, they are not cheap but what choices are there. Give them a call.
Do keep us up to date.
In the meantime have you any Guardian Angel powder, it may help a little.

I am not sure about availability right now, but you could try the avian specialist that we use:

Thank you. I’ll take him in tonight and then ask whether I need to take him to a more specialist vet. Have managed to get him to eat a few kernels of sweet corn. Have you had much experience with Adam yourself? Thank you for the recommendation

Hello and welcome, So sorry to hear about you budgies passing. Eddie is still young for an amazon, but you should get him to an avian vet asap, you have noticed weight loss and he has not been eating much, both red flags that your bird needs urgent attention, he ma have to be kept in to help get him settled and they may decide to feed him and even give fluids plus anti bacteria medication. try to take a sample of his poop as this may help in the diagnosis. My thoughts are with your bird and the family and just wishing Eddie will recover soon

@Eddie Have you called ahead? I am not sure about Adam's availability.

Adam is our regular avian vet. We have four budgies, a Jardine and an Eclectus. They all get regular check-ups.

I am here now. They asked me to bring him in. He has been to the vets every day, and been given wormer and antibiotics. Was hoping he would have been feeling better by now. Picked him up and can tell how much weight he has lost.

Adam was great with Eddie. Agreed to crop feed him and give him antibiotics but was wary as another vet has been looking after him up until now. I explained that his vet wouldn’t be in tonight and I was very concerned. He has discovered what he believes to be an impacted crop so needs surgery, but he is away until Monday now. We are hopeful that the big dose of nutritional feed may help, but if not it’s a matter of trying to feed him whatever we can until then. Worse case scenario is that it’s a tumour. Thank you for all of your help, bit of a tearful mess here xx

Oh dear, I am sorry you have not got definite diagnosis. If it is an impacted crop I would have thought it need emptying.
We have dealt with this here in parrot chicks and in chickens, but obviously you have to be guided by the vet.
Do keep us up to date , stay strong little chap needs you.

I am pleased they are crop feeding Eddie, they will most likely clean out the crop first but may just give a little feed just to see how he reacts, he is in the correct place to receive the help he needs. tumour are not so common with amazons so I will keep my fingers crossed that it is not a cancer. thank you for the update and stay strong

They have literally crop fed him and sent him home with me. It must be a partial blockage as he is still doing some poos. Vet could clearly feel it and since he has been fed the one side of his chest is huge. He hasn’t been sick so would appear there is some room in his crop. Has suggested small pieces of food, ideally pureed.

Out of interest did you get any tests done on the budgies who passed?

I would advise getting some blood work done on your Amazon when he is strong enough, defo a Psittacosis test by blood - please don't do this by faecal sample as you can get false negatives by faecal sample.

Trying cooking some veg up and mashing it up to feed as it will be easier to eat, scrambled eggs as well are a good one - add in guardian Angel or an electrolyte mix. If you can get some mix up some handrearing formula and offer that aswell.

We buried the budgie so sadly no tests done as it was Christmas Day when he passed. Our other budgie has died at the end of October so just thought we were incredibly unlucky. Put down Eddie being tired due to more activity in the house a few days before Christmas...
I will get some veggies to cook and mash for him
Tomorrow and see if I can tempt him. Tried scrambled egg today but had no interest whatsoever. Do you think pet shops will sell hand rearing formula?
Thank you so much for the advice. X

You may be able to buy EMP egg food or Ce De food which you can make soft with warm water and see if he will eat it off the spoon. Or perhaps jar of baby food and warm that through to offer off a spoon.
