Plucking

Strange file encryption you have going on over there... downloaded it resized it to shrink it and it expanded doubling its size!
Interesting plucking pattern …. errrr is your bird DNA sexed?
Yes I had Melville DNA sexed and he is a male.
The last year he is bin very sexy and it's got very bad ever time he had a chance to get sexy he would he get really bad And didn't know what to do do so let him ride the way as they say if I didn't he would bite me and fly at my face and bite my hair.
I was thinking of getting a female but I read up they are happy with their human.

Could be sexual frustration ...
Still keep thinking that looks almost like a brood patch but dna sexed male would rule that one out.
Has anything changed... have you cut your hair, painted your nails, painted the room anything obscure like that? Has the cage moved positions? Change in diet? New toy that has never been given before?
I would be tempted if the answer is no to all of the above then to go to the vets for a health check as a precaution, but if eating heathy no change in behaviour or voice of interaction wise apart from the plucked area not a lot springs to mind except stress related....
Can he see out the window? Has there been a puddy cat looking through the window regularly or a bird of prey he has seen coming through the area hunting.... if its stress / worrying that's the root cause the list is huge of things to look out for....

I'm a reading over and over if ok I'll will get back to you tomorrow like you say the list is endless but the things that has happened recently are important to get to the bottom of what is wrong.
Thank you so much for for your time

Wish I could upload the pictures of how his feathers are coming though I don't know anybody who has a parrot to take to

The problem I can see is trying to stop the habit of plucking, Niblet had a collar from the start of his plucking that helped him but once the bird has got to this stage a collar will allow feathers to grow back but there is no guarantee the bird will not pull them out again when the collar is removed. My first thought was like Dizzy but you have a male, can you remember when it started, what changes happened around that time?

Putting a collar one stops the bird being allowed to express a problem but does not cure the problem that started the issue, to stop the issue you have to sort out the root cause.

Oh dear Melville you are daft doing that.

As I mentioned earlier, one of my Sennies - Boxer started plucking after his brother Jaffa died in April last year aged 22.5 apparently he have a tumour on the liver. Boxer missed him very much and began pulling his feathers, as soon a new ones appeared out they came, his wings and tail feathers are still not all grown back. So the cause of his decision to pull his feather was his brother passing on. We have other birds and another Sennie so he's not alone but it was his brothers passing that sparked it off. Likely something has sparked off Melvilles plucking too. As has been mentioned it may be the slightest of change but enough to set him off.

How to dissuade him from doing it is difficult and personally I would not put a collar on unless there is an open wound as in my opinion they can cause psychological damage.

I rather think what sparked it off was you not taking him with you in the car, so...take him out let him be happy and sing & shout , if he enjoys a car ride then do it. You don't have to end up visiting someone just go for a drive! It's got to be worth a try even once a week for the time being.

you are correct Tasha a collar will not solve the issue, what it can do if used early enough is stop the habit developing. you can work on the reasons of your birds behaviour and hopefully settle it down so it dose not fill the need to pluck. the type of collar I prefer is the clear plastic round ball design, less restrictive than a cone and allows the bird to see any thing approaching from behind

Hiya dizzblue I've bin studying Melville and I think its down to sexual furstation every draw I open he will try and get in it and every dark place he see he will go and investigate.
But has not dropped his wings and got sexy with me.
Its bin four weeks now and you can see in the picture he is letting his down grow what can I do if it is sexual furstation so I can help Melville though it if it happens again thank you so much again for your time

When it gets to the hormone side of the year all mine enjoy having a cardboard box on the floor of their cages, sitting in it and chewing it all up, it passes time for them and even throughout the year I often given them boxes to chew. Just thought I'd mention it as that may help Melville overcome the frustration.

Thank you Diana the last week Melville has bin doing that. He has never ripped boxes up and when I left and empty box on my dressing table he went and ripped it and and was playing with all the bits he ripped off so I gave him another on the next day and he did the same.
I told my sister to save some boxes for him yesterday and he sure does love It.
Thank you again Diana
