Hey everyone  ! I'm new here, my name's Estella and I'm close to bringing home a sweet little cockatiel ! I stumbled across this forum and decided to join :). I have a a question about housing... I have narrowed down the cages down to two-

Option 1 (Yaheetech)- https://www.amazon.co.uk/Monumart-Cockatiel-Lovebird-Birdcage-Durable/dp/B07FFTLS1Y/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=Yaheetech+52"&qid=1595879865&sr=8-3

Option 2 (Little Friends Hamberley)- https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B005CAY8QA/ref=ask_ql_qh_dp_hza

Option 1 dimensions- 79 x 51.8 x 94.5 cm (LxWxH) OR 31.1" x 20.4"x 37.2" with
1.5cm/0.6" bar spacing

Option 2 dimensions-77x 54 x 91 cm (LxWxH) OR 30.3"x 21.25"x 35.8" with 1cm/0.4" bar spacing

Option 1 has no feeder doors, just two main front doors.
Option 2 has one main front door and two upper feeder doors.

In terms of volume/internal space, option 1 is bigger ( Option 1- 386,713 cm², Option 2- 378,378 cm²)
However, I'm worried about the gap on option 1 between the thick horizontal bar through the middle of the panels and the vertical bars- I'll attach a picture to illustrate. Thank you so much in advance to anyone who replies, it means a lot to me :feel_loved: ! Any advice is greatly appreciated!

PS: Sorry if this post is too long...92565-1ea60ece9f3be638b1f680fe780041cc.jpg Here is the photo of the gap I was worried about on option 1 (Yaheetech cage). I may be overthinking this though!

Also, if anyone can reccomend any other suitable cages for a similar/a bit higher price that would also help :D

I have a cage very similar to the both of those. my cockatiels seem very happy in both! with the bar spacing i’d say both are fine but if i’m wrong feel free anyone to correct me on that! option one does have quite a large bar spacing for a cockatiel but i’m afraid i’m not too good with that kinda thing so hopefully someone else can help with that more. my cockatiels don’t actually do a lot in their cage but they still love the space! i personally think both are great options in terms of space! the second one may be better because of bar spacing but hopefully someone can offer more advice with that 😊

Hi and welcome, option 1 looks a good cage. The only thing I would say is in the pic it has the grate at the bottom. If the tray goes over the top of the grate then that would be ideal. They can get their feet caught up in the grates and causes injury.
Option 2 is hard to see.
Don't worry about food bowls as you can buy bowls that will screw on to the cage.

I have this cage for some of mine and I can not fault it. I was recommended this one too.

I wouldn't worry about the cages having no bowls, as cockatiels are ground feeders, if you use bowls attach to the side, they will empty the food out onto the floor of the cage.

We use bird baths on the floor for our cockatiels, they also help to prevent them pooping in it. This is the type we use, we have several, one for the seeds, one for the fruit/veg and one for them to bath in.

For drinking water we use JW Clean Water Silo, the link shows the tall version, but we have the shorter ones, but can't seem to find somehwere on line that has the shorter one.

We cover our cage floor grill with several layers of paper so that they not only don't get their feet caught, but also helps keeps the grill clean. If you cover the grill with 7 layers of paper (we use chip paper, but you can use newspaper), then just take a layer of paper out daily to keep the floor of the cage clean and when you get to take the last paper out, it's then time to give the cage a full clean (weekly).

Both cages that you have shown seem good to me, or what @JessCheekyMia has shown is more durable.

What ever cage you go for, you must replace those dowel rod perches with safe natural branches to ensure that you bird has a variety of perch width to exercise those feet muscles. Also a (just the one) pumice stone type perch will also help keep those toes nails in shape

Hi and welcome to the forum
I know that many have found this cage very suitable originally brought to our attention by moderator Stinkie (Essie) she had it for her totally awesome cockatiel (Stinkie) its on offer at the moment but you can also find money off vouchers for this particular company online so you may perhaps be able to get it even cheaper :)

We have the Hamberley cage. It has no bowls or perches, but that's fine as a lot of cages are supplied with dowel perches that should be replaced with natural wood (with bark), or java wood. The cage can be used separately from the wheeled base so if you had a sideboard or table in a suitable location, it could be used on that. The base has a useful storage tray underneath. The base and cage are quite heavy, but easy to move around on the wheels.

The cage does not come with food and water bowls, but as @RoyJess said, bowls are not suitable for all birds. If we were setting up a Hamberley for 'tiels, we'd go with his recommendations or something similar. For our budgies we use bolt-on bowls, which are very secure and the birds cannot tip them out like they can with bowls that just hang off the cage bars. These are the type that I mean:

We have two complete sets which makes it very quick and easy to swap bowls at feeding times e.g. Food is prepared in a new set. The old set comes out, the new set goes in. The old set is cleaned and disinfected with an F10 solution, then left to air dry ready for the next swap.

Hi Estella, I have had the hamberley cage for a good 7 years now and I love it. It hasn't rusted at all and still looks new. I prefer it to your first option because it's higher and birds prefer that but otherwise they're very similar and your cockatiel would be happy in either cage.

Also if you do get it, definitely get it from the littlepets website, they are fab and my cage arrived the next morning for free.

Thank you so much guys! You're all so helpful! Thanks for the Little Pets recommendations- I'll definitely be ordering there instead. Also thanks for the food/water bowl recommendations! I'll be replacing the dowels- I'm about to order loads of natural branches of Scarletss ( love their website lol ). I think I'll go with Hamberley even though it's slightly smaller- I think it will last longer! I also never knew grates were an issue so I will be removing those to be on the safe side :)

Thanks once again!
