Pet insurance - BPI

If you are unfortunate to need anything other than routine treatment from a vet, fees can quickly escalate. Having to make life or death decisions based on costs is a terrible thing to have to consider, so insurance is recommended. Yes, insurance is optional and it is a gamble, but if the unthinkable happens, you'll be relieved to know that you are covered. To give an example, one day of treatment for our Eclectus Frankie, for what turned out to be Psittacosis (Avian Chlamydia), cost over £650.

For those shopping around for insurance for their pets - furry, feathered or otherwise - you may wish to consider an organisation called British Pet Insurance (a trading name of Petcover EU Limited). Based on our recent experience with them, I personally think that they are worth a look.

Frankie was insured with them. Sadly, he passed away in August 2020. The insurance claims were handled very efficiently and sympathetically by BPI. Once we'd completed our part of the claim forms, they were sent to the vet. They completed their part of the documents and sent them directly to BPI. The claim acceptance came very shortly afterwards and the payment was very quickly made directly into my bank account.

There was an excess to pay on the vet fees (£30), and the only other exclusion was the vet's PPE costs (£10).

Always good to know of other insurance companies who deal with exotics.

Do they do multi pet policies do you know?

Oo im glad that ive seen this!
I did find one company last month but they wanted Bo's microchip number and closed ring number before they would quote us. I found this strange and didn't go ahead, is this normal for an insurance company?

To be honest i cannot remember, ive tried so many companies who don't seem to insure birds. I will do a bit of a check through my emails to see if i can find the company.
Just had a quote from British pet insurance which im impressed with.
Glad ive found somewhere to insure my two!😁

I cannot see any harm them having the numbers and your vet will have a note I expect so this could be included in any correspondence between them re claims. They are unique identifiers aren't they? Insurance companies are subject to fraud too I expect?

Oh that makes sense now!
Here's me thinking they were cons, oops!🤦🏼‍♀️😂

BPI did not ask for Frankie or Jessie's leg ring or chip numbers when I took out the policies, but there was a space on the claim form for them.

I can understand them asking for that information when you sign up with them but to ask before giving a quote seems odd. Unless its cheaper if they rung and or chipped?

Trying to find insurance for my 3. Was going to go with exoticdirect but seems you can only insure 2 pets on the same plan 🤔

just a little note about these two, BPI and exotic direct, now i haven't made a claim so this could be a complete lie.

BPI will only cover an ongoing illness for 12 months or to the end of your current period (as long has you still have funds in your policy) and will then exclude from your renewal or most likely to was the words they used.

Exotic direct "claim" to cover any ongoing illness for the duration of the funds available in your "pot" during the first period of the claim as long as the problem is treated within a 90 day period consistently and relates the the same illness as the original claim.

i checked this with the sales advisor and also got put through to the claims department.

So in basic, if you have a £2000 claim maximum or "pot" of money at the end of your current 12 month period you still have £1000 left and your treating and ongoing illness say diabetes, BPI will exclude diabetes from your next policy and your left over £1000 is gone, new year, new policy with the exclusion.

exotic "claim" that in the scenario above, new claim, new policy will have diabetes excluded, but they will continue to cover diabetes treatment until the full £2000 is used, as in the scenario above, you would still get another £1000 of that diabetes treatment till that £1000 runs out.

not 100% sure I've explained this properly, feel free to ask if you're not sure or ring them an ask the question about ongoing treatments for the same illness.

the way i wrote and explained the scenario to them was.

if i have £5000 in my cover and i have an ongoing illness that costs £100 a month in vet bills.

Bpi said you would be covered for the 12 months and probably not after, so you would get 12 months @ £100
Exotic said, you would be covered for 12 months and probably not after but that illness would continue to be covered for the duration of the funds available, so you would get 50 months @ £100

Im glad you have this post. Ive been wondering whether to insure with exotic direct or these people. I have now gone with the BPI thanks to your post. Thank you!
