Parrot vocabulary

Hi,

I am looking at getting my next parrot from a rescue. I was wondering if parrots learn unwanted words or phrases for example swear words, can they be forgotten again over time? Just wondering as I have always avoided my birds learning swears etc but if i take one on that has a bit of a fowl vocabulary is there anything I can do about it?

You can try ignoring it when they say what you don't want them to and sometimes that works. But never a guarantee.

our grey was/is a rescue and he doesn't say any of the words he used to say when he arrived, he's never swore but he used to say 2/3 names and a few words we didn't know, assume previous owners, the only thing he still says from the early days is his name but even that's changed from a quiet lady voice to a deep man voice, oh and "hey Bert" when he wakes up, that's stuck since day one.

so my very limited experience would say they can.

Was speaking to someone yesterday selling a young eclectus pair for £750. I enquired about the male and was super excited as it seemed as though the owner was happy for me to take him. I then asked how much he would consider selling him for and he still wanted £750 even though i wasnt buying both birds 😔 unfortunately outwith my budget at the moment so will probably end up giving it a miss

That seems rather expensive for even a pair. Go to a rescue, the prices are always fair and you know the money is going to help other birds, not greedy breeders.

To be honest with you i dont get a good feeling about it anyways as he kind of pushed the idea of getting the bird delivered by pet courier, even before he knew i lived quite far away and he wanted £250 upfront then said he would organise the courier and they would email me to say they had the bird and then when i got it i was to send him the rest of the money. I did say i would collect the bird but he seemed to prefer to get it delivered to me. Makes me wonder if hes a scam artist. Seemed genuine, said he'd been in an accident and couldn't look after the birds and sent me a video of a pair of healthy eclectus parrots. Could have just been a sob story and hes trying to play people. From his ad it didnt say anywhere that they were for sale seperately. I have seen young electus parrots for sale near me priced at £650. The others ive seem online seem similarly priced except this one website that sells them at 1,200 each with disease testing done etc. I would like to rescue but when ive gone to fill out the forms it asks for job occupation and description. Im currently unemployed. Unfortunately I left my job before this pandemic and had several other jobs lined up after successful interviews and trials but then lockdown happened 😔 chances are rescues wont consider me

other's are probably more knowable that me, but I joined 3/4 rescues and to be honest me being in full time work was more of a concern, they were more interested in how much time my wife would be home. I would think most if not all would be fine with you being out of work as long as you can afford them.

I have to agree with those above, if that rescue didn't like you being out of work then maybe it wasn't the right rescue, I have to work full time but lucky enough my wife doesn't work, even though she doesn't/won't get Bert out she still talks and plays with him during the day, changes his water, gives him his lunch and at very least he's mostly got company.

im pretty sure I never would have taken him if she worked full time as well.

I do not think whether your employed or not makes any difference with rescues, they have never asked me age or money situation. I do not know where you live but I do know of a couple around Britain. They do home checks to ensure you are who you say etc. You could even look on Gumtree/Preloved, my SIL had a lovely conure for £60, although he was 4 years old and an aviary bird, 6 month later he is her baby but still needs time to become closer.

your work status is not a concern as this dose not mean you cannot provide a good home, I have never asked that question when I see potential carers on home checks, in fact having some one with the bird most days can be an advantage.

A pair might cause you more problems than a single bird. I'd feel that it was a huge responsibility and question whether I was ready to take that on. A pair would probably be more interested in each other and close ranks when you tried to find your way into their lives. I am not saying that it would be impossible, but it could take more time. I'd probably feel uncomfortable about splitting an established pair as well.

Sorry forgot about that, when you are back in work who will keep the bird company?
I have my 2 parrotlets and my family live nearby to check in. I want to make sure I've got everything all sorted out and thought about before i take on another bird.

I live in Scotland and the parrot rescue i found online have an adoption form so i went to fill it out but the second question was what your job is and then you have to state your employers name and also give a description of your hours. Needless to say i didnt make it past the first page 😔 i check places like gumtree, birdtrader, preloved etc daily. Theres not much up this way unfortunately

Now that a charity asks such personal information that they have no legal rite too annoys me. next minute they will want to know your bank accounts status and any debts. I would not be willing to take on a bird from such unprofessional charities

I'm surprised they are asking who your employer is! Asking about your working hours and job in general I can understand as they will want to know how often you are home with the bird candid your job is say a delivery job or lorry driver you may be more likely to be out of the house more. But I wouldn't be happy telling them who my employer was, that seems a bit over the top.

I am sorry asking about hours is a stupid thing to put on any form, it is something that can be asked but as we all know times will change for most people employed. there is one thing asking but to have it recorded in writing is so different. yet again assumptions on a job title not all lorry drivers work long hours, Ok the most hours I worked was running my own business and the last job I had was only a four hour contract but it did not mean I only worked four hours a week. Now I could never say what hours I will be working each day. the question that should be asked is How long do you think you can commit to the bird each day, no need for going into any personal information.

I used to be a chef so worked crazy hours, sometimes 15 a day but if i intended to go back to doing those hours again i just wouldn't be getting a bird. I think its the only scottish parrot rescue. I wanted to fill out the form but that was just disheartening because i dont think they'd consider me

i can't mention them but other rescues cover Scotland, one cover the whole of the uk and Scotland.

maybe have another look ?
