Outdoor Heat

Hi all. I have built an outside aviary for my kakarikis. I want to heat the night box for the colder months, can anyone recommend the best type and safest type of heat source for the job.

Thank you all.

I have tube heater but can't think if that's their actual name.

But to be honest I haven't had to use them for the past couple of years.

As the weather starts to turn I wrap the aviaries in polythene sheeting, a good couple of layers, and this keeps most of the wind out which in turn keeps the inside warmer. Mine do however have a birdroom attached which they sleep in, that itself is completely insulated.

Are you having a shed attached to it or is this a box inside the aviary itself?

Hi, no shed, it will have a box inside the aviary, this was where I was thinking of having some form of heat. I know what you mean about the tube heater, this is what I was considering, as some available also have a thermostat. I suppose I could cover any exposed flex with some fixed conduit.

Ah that makes it a bit more difficult.
You want to make sure they can't reach any wires to chew them.

How big is the box you are putting in?

The box was going to be approximately 600 to 800mm wide, 600 deep and 600 tall. But I was thinking of putting a layer of mesh underneath the heat lamp with plenty of clearence. So the lamp would be in its on void, if makes any sense? Is this size box OK?

How many birds will be in the aviary?

All being well 4 kakarikis and 2 cockatiels.

It sounds more like that's a nesting box size, that wouldn't be suitable for them and you would have issues with then fighting for the box space during breeding season. Plus the issues of them wanting to breed.

You would need to section off a good sized chunk to have it as an indoor area where there is enough space for you to put separate perches in and where the birds can get away from each other if needed.

That's great advice, many thanks
