Hi I'm Andy from Newquay Cornwall and I have a male kakariki parrot that I have had from 10weeks old, or the yellow chicken as my wife calls him.

Hi, he's 6months old and my first and only bird. I had my heart set on an African grey but my wife said I should start with a smaller less demanding parrot. She was right this little chap is amazing and a real companion. I'm building two aviaries and a bird room this winter so I may still get a bigger parrot next year. I'd be interested to know if these are big talkers or not? As mine won't shut up.

Hi and welcome to the forum :)
Slight misconception I'm afraid ..... ALL members of the parrot family are demanding ALL are very very exceptional and ALL are very specialist :)
I have a pair in the aviary with my budgies and tiels completely and utterly loopy little cheeky monsters :risas3:

Yeh i have been very surprised how smart and full on this little chap has been I'm glad I didn't splash out straight away on a African grey as this chap is good fun and I have been learning about parrot training which doesn't seem so scary with this little chap

Hi welcome :wave:What is the name of your boy.? I have 2 cinamon pied kakariki Jack and Jill. They dont talk and are quite quiet just a very pretty call. They are super fast fliers so expect to be buzzed a lot. They are very good at removing wallpaper and climbing :pancarta:. They are happy to eat most fruit and veg. dont worry if he eats raspberries or pomegranate as his face and feet will look red . He is a ground feeder who enjoys scratching on the floor to find his food so having a long cage rather than a wide one is best as he will use every inch of his cage. cover the floor with shreddded paper or crumpled up paper or something called easybed. My seed mix is called AS30. its an excellent clean mix that has very little wasted
they have a fab character always rummaging and climbing.

Hi,

Well we did the opposite of you and plunged for a grey straight away - had no previous experience of any other bird!

We've had Ruby from being a baby so I think that helped as we had no emotional baggage or behavioural issues a rehome can bring. We've got a great avian vet who Ruby has been registered with since we got her and he helped enormously with advice from the start with food, routines and foraging opportunities ideas. This forum helped with day to day issues we may have had and we've not had any major problems at all.

Some people think getting a smaller bird helps you build up experience but in my opinion, there's nothing wrong with getting the bird of your choice straight away if you do your research and have support. However, it sounds like you have plans for a big flock anyway! Your yellow chicken sounds a great companion! They always say small birds have big personalities anyway!

Hi guys yeh I did kinda want to start small after my wife talked me into it as the thought of getting nipped by a massive parrot freaked me out a bit lol although Ringo yeh that's his name can give a nip to bring tears to your eyes. I also feel a big or small bird the problems and training are about the same. Ringo is suffering with his hormones at the moment so I'm getting bitten a lot more due to him being a bit protective and horny but he is slowly coming out of this now. I showed the lady from the pet shop a video of Ringo talking and doing stuff with me, she said that's fairly rare that he's so bold brave and can say so much but being my first bird I thought it was normal lol. He's a lucky chap as I'm a stay at home dad and we have a huge stair case that he fly's up and down like crazy and he's aloud around the whole house.

Hello and welcome from me, Chewy, Maddie, and Pea :)
Ringo sounds a lovely little chap and he's very beautiful. Like Tasch (DizzyBlue) said, they are all exceptional, intelligent, and demanding creatures, but worth every second of nips, worry and hassle for the sheer love and exuberance they bring :)

I have my "big bird flock" and my "little dude flock" :) all of them very special and all of them so very individual.
I adore budgies, tiels and kaks I also adore my greys (3 grey girls) and my amazon boys (BFA and DYH)
