Hi - Bought a Derbyan Parrot last week and looking for advice please.

How and when can we start hand taming the bird? At the moment it seems to be scared... even when we stand and talk to it or anything, it turns around or starts climbing the cage like its scared...

Any advice / techniques would be much appreciated.

Thank you

:welcome:Derbyans are such lovely birds. We he/she hand reared or parent reared?
It is early days yet , lets see if @Roz can advise, but if you look at previous threads I am guess the advice will be more or less the same as given recently to mehul93 under the thread Trust Issues.

Can we have the name of your bird also a photo please

Hi have removed the identical post from the general chat as it's to do with training far better in here
You will need to have a read of the training topics and tell us how the bird currently reacts to you

Hi Diana, thank you :)

Not sure about how the bird was reared but looking at the reactions, I think it will have been parent reared as everything I even go close to the cage, it either turns away to face the other side or starts climbing the cage and gets scared I think.

Not sure if its male / female either as the shop we bought it from said you cannot tell until it is older and currently he said he thinks its around 5-6 months old.

Picture attached - think we are calling it Rocky

Lovely bird, yes you will know when it is approx 12months old whether it is male or female, the male birds end up with an orange beak.
I have Moustached Parakeets which look very similar but are smaller.

Ah ok - currently it has a black / dark grey beak.

Just wished it didnt start running away everytime I went close to it haha

:welcome: @muneeb84 and Rocky!

Yes, do have a look at the thread Diana mentioned - I think you will find it useful.

Right now your aim is to keep Rocky's body language as relaxed as possible by any means possible. You want to be pairing yourselves with good experiences for Rocky. Getting too close so that he shows fearful body language is pairing yourself with an aversive/fearful exerience, which you don't want. Let him settle in without too much attention at first.

Birds feel safer higher up where it is easier to spot predators (hence the reason why birds fly up to curtain poles etc) - he can't get any higher in his cage, but you can get lower. Instead of standing when you have to service the cage, try crouching down. It may work that you can sit near the cage and read to him. But only sit as close (or far away) as he is comfortable - again look out for his relaxed body language.

You may also find that avoiding eye contact may help - birds are prey animals with their eyes on the sides of their heads. It can be very unsettling for them to be stared at by a predator like a human with our eyes on the front of our heads. I avoided full eye contact with my then untame Amazon parrot Ollie for months. Then I'd snatch glances with my head to the side so that he could only see one eye.

Have a look at this thread which may be helpful:

Hi - do you think it would be wise to open the cage and let Rocky come out by itself? Still seems to be scared / turning around anytime someone goes close to the cage...

He would probably enjoy it but does he have somewhere to fly to that he can land on like a stand. You must make sure windows & doors are closed and no hazards around. Also be preapred it may take a while for him to go back in, you won't know until you try.
Let's see what our other members advise.

Thats why I want to try it and see if he starts feeling more comfortable and becomes more friendly? can open the cage up in the hall area and close all the room doors... but can still go upstairs haha

Can't you let him out in the room he is used to being in as that may spook him letting him out in another area.

Picture of where it is everyday... other side of the hall is the same size... just no door to close for upstairs 🙄

They do like to be where the family is and become part of the family.

We leave him in the hall area as during the day theres only 1 person at home until around 5pm... in the hall way, theres someone always walking in / out
