Hi Rossy, We are just outside Perth and, with a small aviary we built for 2 canaries, we are interested in linnies and would be great to hear from you how you've got on with yours in our climate! A couple of linnies would be our next choice, thinking that they would get on fine with the canaries who are very chilled out and unflappable.
Canaries Kucheka and Chiquita have occupied our little aviary (6' cubed roughly) since early May. They have a way indoors and room for more birds. My daughter has been on about linnies for some time... She likes the idea of their quiet nature and that they could be quite trainable. She likes to get up close to her birds! We'd be really interested to hear how you get on (or more like how your many birds get on) in an aviary in this kind of latitude!? How has your linnie fared? Any news or advice would be very gratefully received. Thanks a lot. Pol

Caza66 keeps linnies she can advise on social aspects. There is a place Garden Feathers up at Boulden Colliery that breed and sell them.

Thanks v much DizzyBlue! Really appreciate your message :)
Hiya and welcome. It’s great to have another linnie lover (hopefully).

I have 7 in an outside aviary and generally they do ok in colder weather, although I do provide an oil filled radiator. However, the last two years I have brought them in when we had the extremes, -14 two years ago. Again I think using the heater would have been ok but quite a lot of them were 7 years plus and I didn’t want to risk it. So I brought them all in until spring. My linnies aren’t tame, except banjo who I took in this year. He is indoor with a couple of oldies. Banjo likes to fly around, isn’t hand tame but will eat out of your hand.

If you go for hand tame birds, be mindful of their poops, quite wet and can splat even in flight.

I feel that I am putting you off but I absolutely love them all. Recommend a pair, or more than 4, they are social birds and you’ll soon get hooked. Not particularly loud, quite a range of little clicks and noises.

I’m hopefully picking up another 3 birds this weekend :risas3:.

If you have any other questions please ask.

Hi Caza66, really kind of you to reply so fully. Definitely not offputting! It's good to know they can cope with the British weather. We'd like to give them warmth when they need it, and are considering an inside aviary (!) which up here might be 7 or 8 months of the year.. I've no doubt we will think of tons of questions, so thanks again. We hope your new three are given a great welcome! Great for usto find someone with a linnie family.
