With this breed yes but have had blue fronted and African greys but they had to be re homed with family members as they was a bit nippy so got this young nan who wouldn't dream of biting so happy days

He will get nippy as he gets older parrots are like human children they test the water to see how far they can push the boundaries
Its going to be training and you not reacting plus you learning parrot body lang that will be save the day when it comes down to the crunch

Are you sure about the age of your bird? Looks younger than 5 months the eye colour (baby eyes dark) and I can't see longtail feathers that have grown in yet either..... is it fully weaned and flying?

Going to tag Dave he breeds macaws see what age he thinks it is ..... as your saying 4/5 makes me think you don't a hatch certificate to tell you exact age... @Rio-Evans
@lockey Dave how old do you think this youngster is?

Going by the fluffy head, eye colour and what you can see of the tail i would say only just weaned at a push.
I have had B&Gs weaned at 11/12 weeks but 16-18 weeks is the Norm.
I would expect to still be giving this bird a top up feed.
Is Rio cracking walnuts, almonds in the shell?

Hi welcome to the forum. Rio is beautiful. I second though, that he will eventually bite..... it's a bird thing ;) Remember that they're not expected to like everyone, nor always behave as you would prefer them to. Both of our macaws have bitten us and others and yet they are still very loving most times. I can't help ref the weaning as we got ours at 18-20 weeks and 12 years old, but he looks much younger that they've told you. If it was a reputable breeder, maybe ask them? We were only allowed to take our little boy when he was eating on his own of proper adult food. Occasionally she had a baby that developed a little slower so she kept them longer. Good luck, and enjoy macaw proofing your house! :)

Hello and welcome, Rio dose look very young and I was wondering what is his diet at the moment? Its wrong to say all Macaws will go through a stage of biting But you may notice different stages in his life as his moods can change. It up to you to understand your bird and read its feelings, Giving them respect and also love. I have never been bit by any Macaw, Mine or others I have had the pleasure to work with. his diet in his early years may reflect on your birds health for the rest of its life so I can see every ones concerns being your bird is so young. Its a pity you had not joined when you had your other birds as I am sure we could of helped you and your birds not to bite, our @Roz is excellent in all training matters.

:welcome:Darren and the gorgeous Rio! Looking forward to seeing updates about him. 😊

Babies are usually quite pliable. As he starts to mature you can go some way to avoiding a bite or other undesirable behaviour if you watch and heed body language, and make desirable behaviour, such as stepping up, reinforcing.

What are you feeding the little one and how often are you feeding? And what are you using to feed him?

What food is he showing interest in.

You need to be careful if you are offering top up feeds as it's needs to be the correct consistently for his age and also the correct temperature so you don't damage the crop. You also need to be careful not to overfeed or aspirate them as you're feeding.

Was told to feed him 50 to 60ml with formula with a bit of baby food to slightly thicken op up so it's not like water I put it on cooker boil hot water with his food in a glass so it warms up to 40.2 degrees the feed him by syringe but I just over feed him so that won't be happening again and I feed him 2 times aday

What brand formula an how much formula how many spoons? Also when you say baby food you mean actual baby food? You should never have to thicken formula with baby food this is why im asking

You shouldn't be mixing anything in with the formula if it is proper handrearing formula. You change the amount of powder you mix based on the age of the bird. The tub should give you the correct dosage to make up.

What is the formula you are feeding?
