New Alexandrine owner

improvements that I will advice is change the perches for natural wood, you can take a photo of the trees and shrubs around you and use an app called picture this to find out the name of the tree or bush, then check it up with the woods listed on this site that are known safe. Paper is still safer to use grill or no grill

if he flaps about the pads might blow out or move enough for him to get one , not worth it newspaper all the way happy days.

With many birds I will not use a grill and in the case of the Alexandrine I would not use it, it is not needed as they love exploring the bottom of there cages and also its one less item you need to clean, they sometimes throw out some of there food from the bowl yo get to there favorite feed but will later search the ground its there natural rummaging instinct

So it’s been 24 hours since bringing Rio (not sure if this will be his name yet ) home and after a day of settling in I’ve just made him some fresh veggies and it seems he really likes green peas , I slowly approached his cage on my knees and offered it through the bars and after a short hesitation he came right over and took it from me :aplastao:. Progress!!!

Decided to make a perch for the counter top opposite his cage for when he eventually has the courage to come out .

I have some artificial grass that I was going to line the bottom with but not sure if this is safe . DAEB983C-0C4C-4D90-9230-80B954425EA2.jpeg

I have used artificial grass so I will go over the advantage and disadvantages. most of my flock love it but a few I had to remove it from as they started chewing it, easy to take out side to clean but I did start noticing fly eggs being laid under the grass, I think it may of been where I spray the birds so dampness developed. I tried other coloured grasses and cheap quality grasses and will not recommend them at all. I used them for one year and will I use them again, yes but this time I will make up two sets for each cage, providing the birds I use it with will not chew it. I found it so much better for cleaning (just lifted it from the bottom and took it out side, shook the grass straight into the bin, washed it well and hung up to dry, looks great and far better than paper, it can last about a year this is Niblets cage, yes he loves football I will post a few other photosIMG_0216.JPG

Ok you cut it too size but you should wash it well before using it in a cage or for birds. I do not recommend using it with my Eccie or the greys as they will chew at it. I still use the grass when I do displays

Next question!!!! Nylon rope??

yay or nay

No not nylon too dangerous, can easily get twists around feet/beak/head etc.
I think Hemp rope is used by many, I am sure other members will let you know.
Best leave the wood as it is it can then get chewed and you can replace when necessary, also attach some twigs from say apple/hazel/willow as they love to chew those too.
The Copper tube stand you could use vet wrap to wind around it, but again whatever you put on there you must keep an eye on it being chewed.

Another productive day today ! I left his door open so he could familiarise himself with his new home , I returned home to quite a few bird droppings around the room so he’s definitely been exploring . He likes his new play perch too!
just need to add some wrapping around the copper pipe as it’s a little slippery , think i will use some of the right/safe rope and wrap it in different thickness rather than it been the same .
Also had some good progress on the stepping up onto a stick to get him back into his cage 7F19C92C-C434-482C-BF4F-B39709EE0EAA.jpeg
