Need advice! Rosella taming?

Hi! First post here, really need some advice, preferably from someone with personal experience taming Rosellas?

I recently took in a rescue, my colleague said her husband found the bird in an abandoned house, in a cage, no idea for how long though- A blue Rosella. She said she did her best to look after him, but that he was in a cage with 2 other cockatiels, and that she could no longer keep him as he was "humping and harassing" one of her other birds. He's been pretty well adjusted, I think? After the first few days of having him he started singing and playing with his toys, took him a few more days to not freak out with us coming near his cage.

We've had him nearly a week now, and made some progress but I'm not sure if it's a lot, and whether taming him will be possible :( He'll take food/treats from my fingers but not from the palm of my hand, and he'll walk around/play with toys/eat from his bowl with me sitting at the door of the cage, but I'm not sure at all where to go from here. I understand that his breed does best in an aviary but can adjust if tamed, and I'd love to be able to let him out of his cage for the majority of most days but right now he wont step up, and the 3 times I've let him out I've had to towel him at the end of the day :(

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Hello and welcome, what a beautiful bird you have, Now there are many various colours bred with Rosella's the problem I am having at the moment is trying to work out the exact species of your bird, it may even be a cross bred of two different species of rosella. it may help me if you can post a few more photos, one of the side view and one from the back,

Rosella's in general most will not let you stroke them but this dose depend as the Crimson can become very tame, I have even been able to free fly rosella's in the past. the fact that your bird will already take food from your fingers points me in the direction that it may be a green or crimson or a cross between the two that in there nature they are more trusting to humans than the golden mantled or the eastern.

I wish there was a way of measuring your bird as that may help but at this stage I do not advise you trying to hold your bird as this may make him loose trust.

many rosellas do not get close or preen there partners as most species do not like being touched on there head or back. I cannot understand how any one can leave a bird like this behind, but well done for taking him on. has he got a name

Ok plays with toys, you are correct as many people believe these are aviary birds but I had them in my home with other flock members for most of the time I have kept parrots. I would let it out as much as possible but not feed it while its out as he will have to go back to the cage to get his food. the last thing you want to do is towel your bird as this will lose trust. the cage you have is not good for a rosella as they do need a large cage, the bigger the better. can I ask when he is out dose he fly?

:welcome: Good advice given there. Do have a look under the Behaviour/Training thread, lots of excellent help and advice there.

Yep! His name is Mally, and i managed to get a rough measurement this morning, he's about 28 cm. I really hate toweling him but i also know he needs to have time out of the cage, if i could get him to step up I'd let him out every day. When he's out he flys a looot, he'll either sit on the handle of my bay windows or on the top of the door to the room, we don't chase him or feed him, because the last timewe let him out he spent around 7 hours out of the cage and wouldn't go back no matter what.

I also have no idea what species he is lol but I've attached a few more pictures, i do plan to get him a bigger cage one day, or get another cage of similar size and combine them, but this was all i could afford for now :(

I think we've made good progress but I'd love to have him stepping up as soon as possible so he can be in and out of the cage :) thanks!

I think you may find he is a Blue Pennant Rosella, have a google of that and see if that looks the same as your lovely boy.

I think you're right! The pictures of them look the same as him, thank you!

not so certain it acts like a crimson also known as Pennant, but these birds are larger about 36cm, I have seen the similar colouring in other species of rosella, will think on this and get in touch with one of my friends that breeds rosella's including mutations of differentt colours

Thank you so much! I would really appreciate any tips at all, i try to make more progress with him and he just doesn't seem to take to it :(

the eastern rosella, western rosella, and the northern are between 28 to 30cm long and there has been bred blue and grey variation's, but these are not normally easy to train to be close to you but can be able to take food from you and land on you, they are normally more timid of humans, once they are over the chick stage even if hand reared, My thoughts is that your bird is a cross bred with one of these and the pennant, training wise you will need patients, try to encourage your Mally as you are doing, taking food from your fingers is a great start, I do not think you will get to stroke Mally but as Mally learns to trust you he will fly to you or land near you, its still early days it took two years to get my golden mantled rosella to come to me when I called him so every thing can be possible,

A little fact for you, the crimson Rosella (Pennant) is the only parrot species known that when chicks, the stronger chicks in the nest will feed and help the weakest chicks, this normally helps making certain that all chicks survive, most other chicks will eat what they can and a week chick gets left ot and becomes weaker until it is two week to live or gets pecked by the bigger chicks.
