My scaredy-cat IRN

Some sad news - Kiwi escaped this evening. I was moving him to a quieter part of the room in his cage when the handle snapped and the cage twisted and fell apart. The living room door was open very slightly and he managed to wriggle away from me and through the small gap in the door, then flew straight out of the open patio doors. He’s gone and I’m absolutely devastated 😢 I can’t afford to replace him so I’ll have to save up again to buy another. Thanks to everyone who gave me advice on how to work with him, much appreciated.

Oh my goodness I am sorry to hear this, can you put his cage outside if he is still around he may recognise it and fly down to it, whenlooking for him best earlyish morning and late afternoon I would suggest.

So sorry to hear that😢 Diana gave great advice, you can as well try to play Indian Ringneck flock call on your phone in the morning,he might hear it and reply, although you can’t assume that he stayed local, but with night approaching now he might be settling to sleep in trees if there is any nearby, once dusk arrives, many parrots will not choose to fly or vocalize because in wild it can attract predators, there is group on Facebook for lost and found birds in UK, you can try to post there and check with local vets or shelters someone might find him and bring him there, you can as well do posters, people might see it and then when they spot Kiwi somewhere they might let you know even if they didn’t catch him, sorry my post is a bit chaotic, but English is not my first language

Thank you both for your kind words, the cage is out in the garden with a dish of food and water inside. Hopefully he will come home but I’m not counting on it, he was extremely timid at the best of times and I can’t imagine him wanting to be anywhere near humans at all. I posted on my local Facebook group page and several people have seen him nearby, however there seems to be a number of ring necks that have escaped in my area and now Kiwi is just adding to the numbers already out there! Who knows, maybe the escapees will breed in the coming months and a feral population will establish itself. Still very sad to see him go though, absolutely heartbroken tonight.

So sorry to hear this and so unexpected, this brings back memories of my ringneck Pringle, got frightened when i dropped a cage and flew out the door, he did come to visit my garden for several years bringing his new family with him. he was a great talker and got on with my amazon Charlie. I have not heard him for a while now, I do hope he will seek human help and that he will be returned to you. was he ringed? i will say out of all the parrot species the ringnecks are good at adapting and surviving.

Thanks Michael, he wasn’t ringed unfortunately and there are quite a few IRNs on the loose in my area so he will hopefully adapt and survive. Such a shame though!
