My Clarks Droppings

Hi! I took my clark to a vets that deals with birds on the 9th, as he has been having lots of clear watery droppings and i think he has been drinking a bit more. The vet checked him over took a sample off poo and give him some ornicure for 10 days in his water, which he compleated on monday. His droppings are the same, i am so worried, the vet said he may need a blood test which i dont really want him to have but if no other choice i would let him have it. So got it touch with vet on tuesday and the receptionist said she would get vet to ring back, but they still havent got in touch rang another two times since but no call back. I suffer with anxiety and this is just making me feel even worse. The vets that deals with birds is miles away from me so i cant just pop in as i dont drive. I dont know what to do i'm at my wits end. My clark is normal otherwise apart from the excess watery droppings, i just hope he hasnt got something terribly wrong with him. I messaged two normal vets close to me to see if anyone deals with birds just waiting to see if they message me back. Does anyone have any ideas?

Sorry to hear this, dear little Clark.
Has he been eating a lot of fruit or anything changed in his diet.
Perhaps @DizzyBlue can offer some advice on this.

Hi Diana, i stopped his fruit and veg when he was having his antibiotics, and was just giving him an AS mix and tidymix. No change in his droppings, but then they havent got any worse which is good. I just worry if there is something wrong and i cant help him as i only really have my mum and clark and the cats

So since having the antibiotics his droppings have not got any worse. I wonder whether he's been fighting an infection of some type.
Is your vet an avian one. if not it may be wise to seek one out.
His Clark is lively self or seems unwell.

I dont think the vet is full avian but he does deal with a lot of exotics and birds, its the closest one to me that does deal with birds the rest near me just deal with cats and dogs and other small animals. Clark is very lively he playing and eating just as normal. I have has a message at last from the vets saying blood test would be next, but they said he will have to stay in there as he will be knocked out. I just dont know what to do now as i worry leaving him and if he might not wake up

Does Clark have vitamins with vit A in, i.e. like Ace High , I have no way of knowing but he may benefit from that supplement.

No i have never give him vitamins i do give him a pellet called pretty bird, would the one you suggested be good?

Hi AnnMarie, sorry to hear Clark hasn't been well.
Was the droppings sample taken by the vet sent away for testing or cultured?
I can understand them wishing to prescribe something, whilst they await results, but there should be some follow up and revision of the diagnosis. Some infections could well need longer than a 10 day course of medication, and as you say the ones that are administered by dissolving in water mean that you have to withdraw all other soft/ moist foods.

I don't understand them saying that Clark would need to stay there to have a blood test. MOst vet's use a whiff of gas, and the procedure is very quick, to take a sample. It is very frustrating that they have not returned your calls, do try again, and don't stand for any fobbing off from the receptionist.

I'm going to tag in @Margy to ask which vet she uses.

The nearest Avian specialist that ai know of to you would be Richard Jones

There are many supplements that contain Vit A - Neutrobal, Avipro or Ace High. People usually buy one or the other.

My Senegals have a sprinkle of one of them once or twice weekly on their Tidymix, none of mine have pellets of any type.
Also once a week they have a sprinkling of Milk Thistle seeds on their Tidymix too.
Plus a daily dish of various fruits & green veg and peppers.
Obviously I can only advise what mine have and you realise I have no veterinary experience.

I will add that when my Amazon had a blood test he was given slight gas while they took the blood, a very quick procedure, and he recovered well in his carrier and came straight home.

Good advice given from Tomsmum . Do try not to worry they do pick up on our stress. xx

That you so much for the advice both Diana and Tomsmum, they said he would have to be dropped off in morning and picked up in evening, i dont know how i will get there and back as i dont travel well. I think i will try one of the vitamins you suggested Diana with milk thistle seeds and see how he goes with them and then if no change i will have to come up with how to get there and back to vets for blood test

Forgot to put they took a dropping sample but they said they still havent tested it that was nealy two weeks ago now

Sorry to be a pain Diana, but do you have any links to the vitamins you buy as i'm getting awfully confused with it

firstly if he seems well stop panicing, I know thats easy to say and hard to do but he is not in any immediate danger.

Firstly can you think back to when the wet droppings started, had you changed anything, food, cage, toys, cage floor covering, anything?

Next stop feeding the pellets and any other foods and stick to just tidymix for 5 days to see if the droppings change. also use bottled water for now

Do you know the sex of clark, for sure not a guess? have you seen any change in behaviour since the droppings started changing?

Please don't panic for now he will be fine but should see a good avian vet really, the talk of keeping a bird for a blood test is not correct IMO so lets try to find a vet for you, can you pm admin your postcode so we know where you are.

@Annmarie8 can you post a piccie of his first thing in the morning poop, on white paper, and in good lighting, and DIzzyBlue can assess.

She says don't worry, he's probably just eaten something a bit too acidic and it's upset him...the medication he's been on..just like humans with antibiotics can also upset the tum...so if you are looking at buying a vitamin supplement then maybe look at one that has a probiotic in as well such as Avipro Avian....there are others.

If they've had the sample for two weeks and haven't tested it...it would be pointless doing so now :buenrollo:

please don't give him any vits or additives until you know if he has a problem, if he has a little kidney infection vits won't help
