Moving house!

Afternoon all, so me and my boyfriend have been lucky enough to buy our first beautiful home!

We have secured a belter, a large living room but a spare ‘dining’ room which is separate from the living room, big enough to be a bird room. Birds cages and java tree will be going in there. The birds will be able to still come into the living room all the time we are home but this will be their room when they are in their cages on a night and when we are at work.

I decided to make this a bird room so we can hang things from the roof and make it a fully bird safe area. It’s secure, no doors leading outside and it’s just a great room for the parrots!

At the minute i am super lucky, i live very local to my parents and my mum wakes the birds up for me when me and the boyfriend are at work.
I work shifts and one week i work early shifts over the weekend meaning mum gets the birds up Friday and Monday morning, the following week i work an early shift mid week meaning mum gets the birds up Tuesday-Thursday.
The rest of the time me or the boyfriend wake the birds up and give them their breakfast.
The rest of the time we are with the birds.

My new house is further away from the parents and they won’t be able to help wake up times etc.. my sister is opposite but she isn’t very confident around the birds so for the start she won’t be able to keep their routine either.

I know the move in itself will be stressful and i am planning on moving the birds last, leaving the living room untouched and moving the room in one swift movement so the birds will be leaving one living room and then entering a new one with the same furniture etc.
However, now we have bought a house which is going to be turned into a bird heaven full of toys and fun things to do how do i make this move smooth?

I am worried that Bo will stress, fifi is a robust little monster and nothing phases her. New toys, new cages, new room lay outs do not bother her. Bo on the other hand, he is a little sweetie and change is much scarier for him.

Any help advice and tips would be massively appreciated, we don’t have a move in date as of yet so want to be super prepared for this! 🙂

Its good news that you will be moving into your own home and my best wishes I hope will go with you both. the important thing with your birds is that you keep to a routine with them in your new home, it will mean changes but by keeping to a routine that you can keep too will mean your birds will settle quicker. they make take a short time to settle but once they fill safe, loved, part of your home, fed, watered and looked after they will soon become happy then you will have nothing to worry about. wishing you all good luck and happiness

Congratulations on your new home! I can't really add anything extra to what has been said as we've never moved with birds, but I know there are ones one here who have moved house and some even countries! Best of luck :D

Thank you all!
Moving to another little village sounds horrific, can’t imagine moving to another country!

As long as the birds settle and are ok that’s all that matters to me, we plan on decorating downstairs before moving in so the birds won’t have to move rooms again when the room needs decorating.
I think they will be so much happier with their own play room!😅

Hello, we moved Dora to France, luckily we were able to have two houses on the go at the same time and I brought her here for a fortnight holiday, during which time she had chance to get used to it, see all rooms, know where windows were etc before she moved properly. Maybe you would have chance to take them to the new house to have a look around?

Thank you all,

We would be able to take Bo to have a look round before we move in as we are going to decorate before fully moving in. That’s a great idea!

Oli yes i have finally got the garden i wanted ha! The back garden is secure and super large with a patio shaded area, as houses either side have extensions so our patio is blocked from the full rays of the sun. The rest of the garden gets sun all day but the patio gets shade around 2pm which is perfect!
I had an idea to build the aviary off the bird room so they can get in and out all day long when we are home, when we open their window to allow them.
the boyfriend said we need to think seriously about that haha! However an aviary is top of the list after the move 😁😁

We are very lucky, my sister lives on the street and the lady next door to me used to keep too’s and loves parrots, and the next side is an elderly man who used to keep cockatiels and budgies and also loves birds so we will have zero complains about my monster shouting and singing all day haha!

It sounds like paradise for you and the birds. Just let me know when you are ready to receive Clayton and Grumpy - I'll post them to you First Class. Good neighbours are the key to happiness if you have parrots (and bad ones are the key to misery - take it from me!)!

Haha clayton and grumpy are welcome any time! 😂

that was one of the main things, neighbours!
I was very fortunate in the first 2 years of living here, one house was empty but maintained and the other side was a wonderful man who unfortunately passed away! He used to take the bins in and out and would always watch for the postman when i was on shift to make sure i wasn’t disturbed! So sad he passed!

I can’t say our neighbours right now are bad; but they’re not like our old neighbour. Banging about until the early hours, sometimes shouting swearing music blaring mid afternoon. The other side are okay, approachable and nice enough but have a dog who howls, think ive covered them before.

It has just got to a point i don’t trust the birds in the garden, i don’t know who these people are and i know they aren’t keen on birds (one side has a cat!).
At least when we move the neighbours are bird lovers (luckily!) and id feel safe knowing the birds wouldn’t be hurt or anything malicious!
The poor neighbours to be when the bird starts shouting if they’re off to the shop or need a wee haha!

That brings me onto the next big one, best place for an aviary! I have tried to google but so many are coming up, i don’t mind spending on this as long as it’s secure and safe for the little ones to not fly away into the many trees surrounding our garden haha!

A nice sheltered spot with a decent amount of sunshine will be great, I think. Of course you can also put boards and plants around it to provide additional shade as required (my greys sit in the sun for a bit in the morning, but generally prefer to sit in shade - but if they are under large overhanging branches they get a bit spooked). Generally speaking in my experience, Clayton and Grumpy prefer the aviary to be quite near the house, so they can feel 'part of the action' and don't feel abandoned. And when they do feel abandoned, the noise if of course quite appalling! I'd also say that you'll never regret making an aviary too big, but you certainly can regret making it too small. My next project is a HUGE aviary for C&G, assuming of course that our latest attempt to buy a house succeeds. I'm really excited for you in your new project - what a thrill to be able to design a set up that really works for you.

In your opinion, or anybody else’s opinion what materials etc should i be using? I will talk you through my idea and any advice would be perfect!

So the bird room is located at the back of the house, you have access to the bird room through the kitchen and living room. So the birds aren’t secluded they are in the heart of the action ha! We have these old style wood barn doors which slide shut, so when in the kitchen the door will be shut and the birds won’t be at risk. Birds can go in and out of the living room as they please.
The bird room is at the back of the house which has our patio and garden.

Next door has an extension, her extension is a kitchen/diner so our birds room is next door to her dining section of her kitchen (i feel im confusing this) her extension provides shading on the patio which the bird room’s window opens up onto.
The other neighbour also has an extension which provides the other half of the patio shade.

So my plan is, build the aviary next to the lady’s extension and some how fasten the aviary to our house, i want to do this so when home the birds window can be open and the birds can go in and out as they please. I am going to make the aviary the whole way to the kitchen window (don’t plan on going past the window in case im cooking and the birds are in the aviary; i know Bo will try get in!)
I need a door on the aviary still to make sure i can get inside and clean etc.
I don’t want the aviary to look ugly, i know this is a daft thing to say but id not want to build one that the neighbours would complain about (not that they wood), we have a beautiful old summer house in the garden which is really lovely wood and would like it to match the same style so partial wood and the rest metal as needed. I’m not asking for much hahaha!

I am more excited for the birds room/aviary than the rest of the house ha, im going to have their java tree in the house and then loads of branches and rope perches with toys and hopefully parrot safe plants at the bottom of the aviary so they can have a root round and do what they please.... I have big ideas 😂

Any advice or places to go for an aviary from you experienced bunch would be the best!

Also i love seeing birds, a man near my current house has a grey! I walked past this evening and the grey was in his cage at the front door whistling away! I was desperate to knock on and make a new friend but the boyf made me walk past haha!

Hi hun congrats on the new house. Think I'd move in and just observe things before going ahead with the aviary, get a feel of things first. Check out how much sun and breeze/wind different parts of the garden get. Have you though of adding it to the house so it can be opened up from indoors? Roz has a splendid example if you need any ideas :)

Hello! Thank you 🙂
We are aiming for spring/summer next year to have the aviary setup, just because it will be October by the time we move in so although it’s a priority, i don’t think it’s needed over winter haha!
According to the neighbours and my sister who lives opposite the back gardens get sun all day round, the patio area of my house is in between two extensions so the aviary will be in a shaded part of the garden, even though it will get partial sun.
Neighbour told me because the gardens are surrounded by trees the breeze is lovely on a summers day 🙂

The plan is to have it attached to the house, just to give the birds their own freedom of going in and out as they please (when we are home) ha!
It’s great to know Roz has a brilliant example, i haven’t yet found one which suits my needs!

We measured yesterday and the aviary can be 11 foot from the house to the end of the patio, 11 foot wide and as tall as we deem fit. This only takes half the patio so now the research is onto the best size for our boy 😂

thank you so much for the advice though! 😅
