Monkey Nuts

Hi I came across Monkey Nuts in Asda they had packs of what they said where Raw monkey nuts and then the roasted Monkey nuts. Monkey nuts came in a seed I bought her from Tidymix but I just wanted to make sure which ones I should buy her (My partner will help her eat them as well) she loves a monkey nut she is a Indian Ringneck

Many people do not give Monkey - monkey nuts in shell can contain fungi spore that may cause aspergillosis (a respiratory condition). ... although human grade roasted nuts may be safer. I do buy those but I crack the shell first to released the puff of possible spores, they only have one maybe twice a year.

Thank you Diana, I will play safe and not give her any , is this the case of all nuts in shells or just the monkey nuts, would hate for Kiwi to get poorly because I fed her something that could make her poorly. Feel really bad now that she had one the other day specially as she devoured it and seemed to love it, but would rather play safe.

It's not the nut that's the issue it's the outer shell.
When they oven roast them it does kill the mould spore.
You can usually tell those we problem the have mould marks on the outside and when you crack them open you see a little puff almost like whisp of grey air.

The mould is called aspergillosis however not all birds would develop the airway issue it's those with compromised immune systems. And aspergillosis spores are everywhere in soil in houses etc! The shell being the issue not the nut. The nut isn't really a nut just to complicate things further it's a legume! The legume is very fatty but does have a small nutritional content.

I feed them have done for years but I stick to those in shell being human grade and oven roasted they're a treat in this house.

I think it's just the monkey nuts that are a problem in this respect as they grow in the ground. Even still, if I give Dora nuts in their shell , (even if from my garden) I usually wash and dry them first as they might have wild bird poop, or other contaminants on them.
Thank you Wendy , Just read what DizzyBlue has written as well, Kiwi definitely liked the Monkey nut I gave her which was in her food am not sure if it was the food I got from the previous owner or the Tidymix I bought. So will get her some and still let her have them in moderation but make sure they are oven roasted and will wash and dry them first like you do.

Thank you DizzyBlue I will get the oven roasted ones today as she really enjoyed the one I gave her but will buy the oven roasted ones and will give them a wash and dry before feeding any to her , think I will use them as a training treat for when she does something really big - like if she ever steps up on my finger or lets me stroke her.

I need to dig my clicker out so I can start shaping the step up as I don't want to rush her before she is ready, but she really has come on lots and yesterday was taking little almonds.

@kiwi2023 no need to wash and dry
If you wash and dry a few then you could actually encourage asper spores to come from surrounding area and attach as you caused a damp environment.
Keep Kiki's food in an air tight container never in direct sunlight we don't want it sweating. Also never buy huge amounts check its use by date same as you do for human food. Things that come in air tight packages like Harrisons treats etc people buy a huge load when its on offer problem is once opened they forget it has to be used within a certain amount of time of opening.
I do buy sacks of feed but then again I have more birds than the average bunny rabbit. So to check my seed is actually nice and fresh regardless of the use by date on the sack, I grab a handful and sprout it. Fast sprouting time of all the variety of seeds and I know its fresh stock in the bag Slow sprouting or only a couple of items sprouting I'm already thinking duff seed been stood too long somewhere and I get rid.
It's all about logic.
The bird will eat regardless of if its good or bad it can't go out and forage for what it needs so the option for them as they graze all day long is pick out what they can that's good but forced in to eating what's left because its that or starve. As their keepers its up to us to ensure that we purchase is the best we can get to ensure their healthy living standards.
Doesn't matter how fancy a bag or high purchase price that doesn't make the contents any better if its been stored incorrectly in a warehouse somewhere. Hence purchasing something like TidyMix I always purchase direct from the maker rather than an agent. It makes sense to cut out as many places in between as possible. Plus TidyMix is human grade meaning if you fancy a nibble you can too quite safely....... just watch the chillies if you eat anything :risas3:

That is great will not wash them as they are human grade that I will be buying and one of the reasons I went with the Tidymix which someone recommended as they use the human grade food. I did only buy a small parrot (think it was 250g) and the same amount parakeet seed as someone on forum recommended, I did buy Kiwi two treat bars from the range which I will replace regardless of how much she has eaten off it. I do have her seed in a airtight container (used to do it for the budgie food when I had my budgies. Am beginning to discover what Kiwi does and doesn't like in the seed mixes as the stuff she doesn't like she takes off me but then drops them on cage floor lol, so at least I can just offer her what she likes by hand hopefully she will find it rewarding am waiting for a video to upload so I can edit it and post it on forum as update where she is eating millet from my hand, my OH is likely to pinch the Chillies , kiwi so far hasn't seemed overly impressed by the chillies lol.

Try her on some fresh chillies.
Leave the fruit bars they can last 10 days then discard they end up fluffy and dusty if not demolished by then.
I have a floor full of things that one bird or another has decided isn;t desired today or actually not that impressed with my offering,,,, amazing how fast they end up training us!

Yes I think Kiwi knows I am a soft touch , I going to spend some time reading the rest off Roz's post in training as I not convinced when Kiwi does move away that me then removing myself from the situation whether that is doing more harm than good , so will definitely need to read some more, as don't want to force myself on her and her see me as an aversive specially when I trying to get her to trust me, but I know it is still very early days yet to get her to come on to my finger, I take warfarin and I would risk getting a bite from her just concerned re the warfarin in my blood. I did get bite many times of my female budgies and nothing ever happened to them (because I used to show them they needed to be spotted etc not that I could do it but used to have to get them out of cage to give to someone else who would do it for me). I imagine if she did draw blood that it would just be such a small amount that it would not impact on her but it something I need to bare in mind. I took a video I just don't know how to resize it as it too big to upload .

Video's are a whole different ball game you need to upload to something like youtube and then post the link to the forum
