Macaw Beak

Hiya, just as an extra to what has already been posted above, here is another short blog from Bird Tricks to add to the reassurance that is OK. If you're anything like me I'll read something that assures me of a point..... then keep looking anyway ;) .

@DanAndMarley thank you for the photo of beautiful Marley this morning! :) I can see what you mean!
@MJGB - MikeJenGaryBeckyBoo thank you, it’s like you know me so well! I can’t get that link to open at the moment for some reason? It’s just startled me because it’s such a big chunk! But I think I’m extra aware of his beak at the moment :risas3: I’m driving myself mad

Thank you guys
I have decided tonight to email my vet and see what they say as I feel he’s lost a sizeable chunk very suddenly rather than layers flaking and I don’t feel this has happened before. I’ve sent the photo to them.
I just wish I knew what was causing these problems and how I can fix them for him :crybaby2:
I’m trying so hard to do everything perfect so that he gets everything he needs.
I have found that sprouting things and getting them to actually eat them, are two different things :risas3:

I sometimes blend them with other things oatmeal, brocolli etc. etc. Have you tried eating some yourself and offering yours to Milo? It quite often is what is yours is mine, certainly my lot keep trying that route.

Thank you for replying Di.
Yeah vet just said to keep an eye on it and if I have any concerns or it gets worse to contact them.
Yeah I didn’t know whether to encourage chewing or not. On one hand, it could even it out , but I don’t want it to break more . I’m such a worrier!View attachment 37444
Omg!! Just come across your photo. Can't help with the crack but If I did that with Alf I would be minus a digit o_O

@Sarah-Jane Ollie's, Bobbie's and JoeJoe's (Amazons) beaks have all shed large pieces. I took a pic of Ollie's when it happened as it was so alarming. Nearly the whole top layer came off. I think it is a natural shedding process and/or maybe trauma? I seem to remember this happened a few weeks after Ollie flew into a window when we moved to our new home. Bobbie's and JoeJoe's happened without trauma to my knowledge and were pieces about half the size.

@Roz oh my goodness. Maybe it’s more normal than we think then. I don’t think Milo has had any trauma either

Ok so a quick recap…

In August 2023, Milo broke a piece of his beak off for the first time, I took him to the vet the same day (avian) and they put him under and filed it and took full blood tests. Everything came back normal. Vet tells me that she has no concerns, his beak is structurally strong,
October 2023 he does it again. I take him back and see a different avian vet as the first one left. Again, she puts him under, files his beak and checks him over. She too has no concerns and tells me his beak is structurally strong,
Since then, he has broken his beak every 6-8 weeks, I stopped taking him to the vets because I felt it was a lot to keep putting him under, and each time it was eventually just evening itself out with chewing,
Then I had a couple of months where nothing happened.

Then beginning of August this year he does it again, always the same bit breaks off. I’m not too concerned, I’m used to it, it was a week before I was flying to America but when I’m away my mum moves into my house as she has been with my birds since they were chicks so she knows them like I do.
So off I go on holiday,
Then a week in, my mum says, Milo has broken his beak. I said yeah I know, it will even out. She said well he’s done it more, there’s a big V shape missing in the middle. She sends me a photo and although the break is different, I’m not too concerned. Well within 20 mins I get a phone call saying he’s being sick. Instantly I know that’s not right so I tell my mum to phone the vet. It’s 11pm by this time and my vet says I need to see him. My vet is an hour away and my mum doesn’t drive.
So I’m panicking the other side of the world, arranging someone to drive my mum and Milo while talking her through what to do. My best friend goes round to help, however Milo being stubborn will not go in his travel cage.
SO
And this is where my vet is amazing,
The head avian vet who owns the surgery, drove an hour to my house to pick him up. At one in the morning.
She took him to the surgery and gave him anti sickness, inflammation meds, fluids. He wasn’t sick anymore that night. They kept him at the surgery for 2 days just because it took soo much to get him there, they wanted to be sure. They gave him pain relief and he bounced back singing and dancing. They have special consultant rooms especially for birds so instead of the table they have perches and they let him free fly in the room for the whole time. The nurse sent me an email with photos, he was sitting on her shoulder, eating grapes and drinking mango juice as if he was in a hotel. When my mum went to pick him up, he was cross with her  but happy to come home.

Anyway, so the vet checked for crop infection etc because of sickness but couldn’t work out why he was sick. She has said she thinks where his beak broke that time, it went a little bit too low and caused him pain which made him sick. She didn’t put him out again to file the beak as she said it wasn’t that bad and would straighten out, which it now has. She did say however, that his beak is slightly weak ( first time I’ve heard this as other two who works with her said the opposite) and that he’s vitamin D deficient. I have both an aviary and a UV lamp, but don’t use either of them enough ( now I feel terrible). So I’ve been told to get the lamp on for a minimum of 2 hours every day.

The only thing that’s confusing me is that if he was vitamin D deficient, it would’ve shown on his bloods? I trust her obviously and I will do everything she says, I just feel like no one can tell me why this keeps happening and what I’m doing wrong. All ideas and thoughts welcome.

Any advice on which UV lamp is the best welcome, as I want to buy a new one.
I’m now home, and he hasn’t left my side.
Sorry for long post! X

Long posts are good! Gives every bit of information.
Think you should be highly recommending your vet on here for the rest of us too.
If you give supplements double check their use by date. I use Nutrobal once a week.
And if he likes boiled eggs then get them on the menu too but not too often.
If the bloods were fine I'd defo be going with the weak beak scenario not the D deficiency.

Blimey defo a two chocolate bar thought plan ... good job I opened a twix :yikes:

My vet is Catherine Thomas at Suffolk Exotic Vets. I’m sure she’s on our vet list and I cannot recommend her and her team enough, they go above and beyond and it’s obvious she does it for her absolute love of birds and exotics.
She even gave Milo his own Alexa during his stay so he could listen to the Beatles.

I’m guessing a weak beak is just one of those things? I’m sure I read that vitamin D3 also helps with calcium absorption? So I trust her judgement and will follow her advice. Nothing she said though sounded like she had major concerns for him.

Good morning @Sarah-Jane . Sorry to hear about Milo beak problems still exists. As for lighting I can really recommend Arcadia ProT5 this is the best avian lighting for large cages and indoor flights on the market, that I am aware of, and certainly a lot better than my original avian lighting and I am also using the reptile version for my tortoises indoors over the winter months.

Yours vet does sound like a really good one and certainly went the extra mile for Milo. But I don't understand where she is coming from with just saying two hours or more under the lamp, when birds need far longer under the lamps, as the UV rays are nowhere as strong as natural sunlight. If you could get Milo outside just for half an hour under natural light would be far superior than a lamp, but a lamp is definitely needed for indoor use too, as this has other benefits to.

I don't know what type of diet Milo is on but while he has a deficiency your probably better off feeding Harrisons High potency course and supplementing the diet with fruit and vegetables in the recommend amounts that Dr Harrison recommends. But please talk it through with your vet before changing the diet.

Hello @DanAndMarley thank you so much for replying. I will look at the Acadia Prot5 thank you, is it one that attaches to the cage or free standing?

To be fair, she said a minimum of 2 hours , but I totally agree.
He does have an aviary which attaches to his room so he can go in and out as he pleases. However, I have to get him in at times as he tends to scream when he’s out there and after a while I have to consider the neighbours. Is there anyway I can get him used to it without screaming? I sit with him as much as I can as he doesn’t do it if he can see me!

He is already on Harrison’s high potency, he has lots of veggies and fruit and I make a parrot ‘chop’ in batches which is lots of veggies, with his lentils and a sprinkle of seeds mixed in. He also has things like sweet potato etc I also sprinkle nutrobol on his food about once a week and he has a finger of toast with palm oil on.
I’ve heard boiled eggs are good but it’s the one thing I struggle to get him to eat!
Not sure what else I can do

Hi, I'm sorry I've only just seen this, I keep getting kicked out off the site so don't get any notifications. Everyone has basically said what I would say also. I was going to recommend Harrisons high potency. Out of interest..... how much do you give him? Just for a reference, ours are currently on 10 cubes in the morning and 6-10 cubes for teatime, plus the veggies and some fruit although veggies are the main thing. I understand the frustration of him screaming outside, ours aren't too keen on being out without us, but don't tend to get too loud. Maybe long term do training to teach him seperation is ok? Leave for short periods then walk back into view when he's quiet or making 'nice' noises. I'm glad you've got such good vet! I'm sorry though that I can't add anything else to help!

No worries! Thank you for replying!
It can vary how much Harrison’s he has to be really honest, I try my hardest to get him to eat it but some days he’s more keen than others and I’m anxious of his weight dropping. He has a few cubes in the morning with his breakfast and then will eat about 10 cubes from my hand at night but only if I hand it to him!
We managed 35 minutes in the aviary today! Again, some days he will happily sit out there singing, but other days it’s just a no,

He's such a handsome boy! Well done for aviary time today. I wish ours had as many chest feathers as your little boy!
This is quite new for Milo! I don’t really know what’s changed but he has ‘barbered’ his feathers since he was one. We think it’s an over bonding thing to me as it started when I met my (now) husband.
This was him exactly a year ago!
