Macaw Beak

Thank you everyone. I went to Tesco last night and I bought some things to sprout. I have left them to soak over night and this morning I have rinsed twice and left the jar on its side on the windowsill. I hope I’m doing it correct! :risas3: It’s harder than it looks As I found it really hard to drain the water through the gauze?
well I’ve just been on Amazon and purchased an actual jar so hopefully that will be easier

Does Milo eat pellets? I’m thinking that might also be a good way to get more protein into him. I’ve just had a consultation with Pamela Clark and she has recommended getting my flock eating high potency Harrisons for 6 months to right any deficiencies. That’s in addition to sprouts, veggies, fruit, nuts (not too many) and cooked grains and legumes, and some seed. Apparently Harrisons and Roudybush are the only ones she recommends.

Unfortunately Imgur has deleted all my pics, so for an updated version of sprouting (pics included! 😁), please see here:
@Roz Just out of interest, what did Pamela Clark recommend for pellet to vegetables, fruit etc ratios?

some small piercings may be necessary hun depending on the gauze. A jar from one of the cheap/bargain shops work well also if you need anymore.

Just from our own experience, we currently feed our macaws (excluding a couple of treats over the day) ...

Breakfast 20g Harrison's, 4 power treats, 5 pine nuts, 2 other nuts eg.. almond and walnut.

Tea (dinner) 15g Harrison's, 1 heaped tablespoon eg veg or sprouts

We used to feed more veg and less Harrison's, but we were getting concerned about meeting the nutritional needs overall and so switched the ratio. Easy for us as our birds adore Harrison's!

The only reason I ask the question, as most manufacturers say 60% to 80% of pellets and the rest made up of the extra bits (vegetables, fruits etc). But they never tell you how much that 20% to 40% is, is it done on dry matter or the volume in grams. Harrison's are the only company that give any guidance on their tea spoon measurements that are listed on the packet.

I know right!! We had such a time trying to figure out quantities initially, but like you say Harrison's at least give some sort of clue.... although the "feed macaws 20g - 60g daily" isn't necessarily helpful  We just reasoned "hahns to hyacinth" in the guidance!

So I’ve come home from work today and the layer of white on the top of Milos beak has come off! I don’t know what’s going on as they keep telling me his beak is healthy. I’m not sure if anything can be done? Do I just wait for it to regrow? I know they get layers come off all the time, but usually there’s another layer ready underneath. What will happen if it all comes off?D3DEBEF6-CD71-42DC-AB3E-19B3696252A0.jpeg

Thank you guys
I have decided tonight to email my vet and see what they say as I feel he’s lost a sizeable chunk very suddenly rather than layers flaking and I don’t feel this has happened before. I’ve sent the photo to them.
I just wish I knew what was causing these problems and how I can fix them for him :crybaby2:
I’m trying so hard to do everything perfect so that he gets everything he needs.
I have found that sprouting things and getting them to actually eat them, are two different things :risas3:

Marley is shedding his beak at the moment which happens quite often. It's mainly small flakes that come off, but this summer a sizable bit came away, which I would say was around a quarter of the beak in size. I think another large piece is going to come away soon too. Am I worried about it? Not at all, it's just naturally happened and it's how the beak grows and replaces the old layers.

Thank you Dan for your reassurance.
Can you tell I’m a worrier!
How old is Marley just out of interest?
Milo is nearly 12 but this is never happened before which is maybe why it feels worse
