Lost tail feathers.

Rio.(owa) had a bit of a panic after being covered last night. We were still in the room so it didn't last long because I was right there to open up cover and settle her. but she lost 6 tail feathers. She now has only 3 on one side. This is obviously going to cause her probs with flight. If anyone has had this before did you let your bird out or keep them confined. I don't want her injuring herself trying to fly but I also feel awful about keeping her confined to barracks. Any advice welcome please.

Hiya Dido
It's a normal thing to happen it's a reaction when the tail is touched when panicking they drop them to get away from a predator.
I let mine out as normal yes it slows them down but they soon adjust just keep an eye out in case your bird tries to leap from a high point of tries to head up to the highest point.
Feathers sprout quicker than you think in this instance.

By keeping an eye out I don't mean stop the leap but if they do land before planning to count to 10 before going to their assistance you need to make sure your not blamed for them not reaching target.
Rio will soon realise flying is slower and more effort is required and adjust what needs to be done
They're more resilient then us!

Not this. But she's had a rough ride over the last 12months. My friend died so she came to me for rehoming. Due to finding out she has health problems and us getting besotted with her she's got a home here. Alfies not as happy as us though. But we're managing that.
Ah hope the health issues with your good care resolve hun. Alfie has a touch of jealousy?

Haha we're not alone then. I know what triggers hers...food....how does that much noise come out of that sweet little face?? I think my friend made it worse by telling her off because Rio shouts "don't start that"!!!! at the top of her lungs mixed in with blood curdling screams and "stop it"!!! We tend to just let her shout it out and Alf keeps piping up with "sshhuuss! And "what ?" which is what we say to the dogs barking.... mad house!! Lol

So far so good. She's going from stand to stand and cages. As long as she's doing that I'm happy. What I don't want is the manic flying and screeching to an inch from the corner of the room and last minute turn that she does . I don't think she can do that until some regrowth.
