Losing interest too fast?

Hi! So i have a Rosella, and i worry that they're getting bored  their cage currently has a larger chewing toy (yellow rope and different coloured blocks) and at first they were all over it for days, but now they hardly ever chew on it. He also has a ball shaped rope toy to chew on, some bell/plastic toys, and more little things like that.

I just worry because he hardly touches these toys while in the cage, and spends the majority of his time out of the cage just chilling out on perches. I'm worried hes not being engaged, I've made some foraging toys but they're hit or miss.

I try making it more engaging by changing the positioning of everything but it doesn't seem to help, and I've already spent way too much on toys xD I'm planning on getting stuff to try making my own toys but does anyone have any tips or something different i could try? Anyone have rosellas and what toys they like? It feels like he loved to chew everything but that he's losing interest in the chew toys we've gotten him.

Thanks in advance!

Hi it sounds like your chap his happier out of the cage just chilling. I have a feeling they are often kept as aviary birds. I am sure others will be along with advice for you in due course.

old books especially cook books, they like chewing cardboard and paper most of allView attachment 28469
They're beautiful! Our Rosella is a pennant, he loves chewing but loses interest so fast, and doesnt spend more than a few minutes on cardboard boxes/toilet roll tubes/and twigs :/ i just worry that he's understimulated, out of the 6 hours a day he's out of the cage, he'll spend most of it just flying between perches, not playing with anything :( and because he isnt tamed much we can't play with him directly, but I'll definitely try books if i have any we dont need!

So you have a crimson rosella, you are lucky they are my favourite of the rosella family. they can become very close I had a pair Clair was a very special bird so close to me. I was able to free fly them together or just Clair on her own, My old neighbour was only talking about her yesterday, when I picked up her budgies to look after for just over a week. they become very trusting of humans but they can have a habit of chewing in to plaster.

Is plaster safe for them to chew on? We dont have much plaster in the room where he is so it hasnt been an issue, though he sometimes chews on the door top but i worry the paint on it is bad for him 😩

We love photos, I will try to find an old post to see if any photos of mine are still on here
Yay! I think the Rosella i have is a pennant, because he's blue/black/grey, not sure how old he is but judging on his size i assume he's fully grown at least? No idea, but he's making good progress, slowly trying to get him used to my hands so we can attempt step up training 😁

Yes I think you have a blue mutation of the crimson rosella. He looks beautiful, did you know that the Pennant is the only member of the parrot family that the young chicks will feed the weaker chicks in the nest insuring most survive. its fascinating to watch

Plaster it self is full of calcium, I tried to stop her by giving other things like cuttle fish and extra calcium in her feed. unfortunately just after I gave her a shower she chewed through a wall by the wall light and electrocuted her self, it was a very sad day

I add bells to the toys I make (tiny cowbell shaped, available on amazon if you don't have a hobby/craft shop near you). It seems to generate more interest in the toy when they play with it. There are also swings, (made of a set of interlocked brass rings in a set of three or four, depending on the size of the bird), which my birds really love (each has a bell at the bottom as well), but the length of which will depend on how tall your cage can accomodate. I frequently see them swinging back and forth, sometimes hanging upside down flapping their wings, squawking and hitting the bells with their beaks, or even grabbing them to ring by shaking their foot.
