Long days alone!

Hello everybody!

The day i have worried about since getting Bo is fast approaching, i work shifts and usually Bo will be alone twice per week from 6am-5pm. Tomorrow and the day after Bo is home alone (with my other parrot) whilst me and my boyfriend work the day shift.

Bo is in a routine and goes to bed between 20:30/21:00 and wakes up at the same time the following morning, my mum has agreed to come on and wake both birds up at 9am then give them their fresh fruit/veg so really Bo will only be alone for around 7 hours.

I have a radio i put on when im not in the house and Bo is not scared of new things (surprisingly) so tonight im going to rotate his toys so he has a fresh set to get his beak into. The foraging toys have not arrived and not due until Friday, but by then my shifts are in the afternoon and my boyfriend will be home.

Just wondering how people entertain their parrots when they're alone? My little guy Alfie has never cared and just enjoyed time when i was home but i think Bo will be bored, im worried about that boredom kicking off plucking behaviour.

Any ideas are welcome! Thank you.

Well I would put radio/TV on and leave a small light too, leave plenty of foraging toys and things to do, if your mum is going in to feed at least they will see someone for a short while.

Id go down the radio route aswell. Foraging toys are always good. If you haven't got them yet do you have any small cardboard boxes you can fill with shredded paper and treats?

Mum said she will try nip in during the afternoon when she has finished work too. Hoping he will get through these two days and then the next time im gone during the day the proper foraging toys will be here.

I don't want to change his bedtime to fit in with me because at least when im home around 5 he will be out with me until 9pm. When the TV is on he thinks we are home and whistles for us, if the radio is on he knows we aren't here and just destroys toys haha

Thank you for the reply!

Thank you for that idea! I'm sure I can dig a box out from somewhere with the amount of shoes i own! I have done some empty kitchen roll holders with some treats and he has destroyed them and not eaten what's inside but at least he's happy! He's not keen on going to the bottom of his cage right now but i can hang it in a corner where he will be happy to destroy.

Thank you so much!

Afternoon!

Quick update, i have found a number of boxes which can be used.
I have made a foraging toy out of an old egg box which i have washed thoroughly this morning and dried (im surprised that it didn't fall to pieces after the wash i gave it), i have put shredded paper and loads of goodies in.
Did this so i know tomorrow if he will be interested in the bigger box.

He is currently headbutting the toy, which i suppose is a move in the right direction

Thank you for your suggestion!
